Barton Aqueduct Towpath Reinstatement
Royal HaskoningDHV are privileged to have been commissioned by Peel land and property to undertake the detail design of the replacement towpath across Barton Aqueduct. The aqueduct is a Grade II* listed structure, which remains as the only swing aqueduct in the world. Royal HaskoningDHV are undertaking the design using the latest digital technology. Merret Survey scanned the structure and produced a Revit Model to LOD400. Using the Revit model and point cloud of the existing aqueduct Royal HaskoningDHV were then able to produce an outline design for the various structures within STAAD and directly export the design into Revit.
A combination of sources was used to create the complete/federated model, such as Revit, Civil 3D data, existing topographical surveys, point clouds, open source LiDAR and Infraworks.
The planning drawings were produced using a combination of traditional 2D elements, as well as including various 3D renders of the project at specific locations. Using 3D rendered images allows the project to be easily communicated to the relevant external parties and helps provide an understanding of what the proposed structures will look like in real life and how they will impact on the existing built environment.
Using Autodesk BIM360 as the CDE on the project has been greatly beneficial during the Covid pandemic as it has allowed all 3D models and associated drawings to be viewed remotely, while working from home, by all members of the team without the need for specific software such as Revit or AutoCAD.
Using Revizto as the issue tracking and collaboration software, the federated model is regularly reviewed and any design issues, clashes or general comments can be easily raised with the appropriate team member and monitored and managed by the model coordinator.
Royal HaskoningDHV are committed to using digital technology to enhance project design
