“Science is largely publicly funded but rarely publicly accessible.” This statement highlights a big imbalance in sharing scientific and health information. Many barriers prevent critical knowledge from reaching those who need it. This hinders innovation in climate and health sectors. Let's explore these barriers as accessible information could transform our world.
What Makes Research Inaccessible?
Several factors contribute to the inaccessibility of scientific and health information. Key among these are cost, language, and awareness.
Cost: One of the most significant barriers is the cost of accessing research. Many scientific journals and articles are behind paywalls. They require costly subscriptions or one-time payments. This barrier limits access to those with well-funded institutions. It excludes independent researchers, smaller organizations, and most importantly, the public.
Language: Scientific and health information is often very technical. It's full of jargon that can be hard for non-experts to understand. Also, much of this information is in English. This is a barrier for non-English speakers.
Awareness: Many don't know where to find, or how to interpret, scientific and health information. Poor communication between researchers and the public worsens this issue. It leaves valuable information underused.
Implications of Inaccessible Information
Inaccessible information has deep implications, both for individuals and the world.
On an Individual Level: Many struggle to find information to make informed health decisions. Lack of access to reliable information can harm health. It can also raise anxiety over issues like medicine and the environment.
On a global level, hard-to-access information limits our ability to solve global challenges. It hinders our effectiveness, innovation, and collaboration. When researchers and policymakers lack access to the latest findings, progress slows. Opportunities for innovation are missed. Also, public support for science drops when people can't access or understand it.
Public Perceptions of Science
The coronavirus crisis has increased interest in science, leading to more media coverage. Public perceptions are significantly influenced by how accessible and understandable scientific communication is. Effective, accessible communication of scientific information can boost public trust and engagement. Creativity and clarity are also essential. Innovative methods can engage. But, clear messaging ensures accuracy. From my experience working in marketing, clear and relatable communication can transform perceptions. Using these principles in science communication can demystify complex topics. It can also foster a more scientifically literate society.?

Open Access Research
Open-access research aims to make science free for all. This approach removes financial barriers. It allows anyone with internet access to read, use, and share research findings. My experience working in a climate policy think-tank / consultancy highlighted the frustration of needing access to vital research since I need it to provide up-to-date advice. But, it is often behind paywalls despite having the right credentials. I have often relied on colleagues with PhDs or those with academic emails to get information. This shows a need for broader access. This limits the impact of vital scientific and academic work. It keeps it confined to academia, limiting its broader impact.
Open-access research democratises knowledge, fostering a more inclusive and innovative research environment. However, it is not without limitations. Open-access publications are often funded by authors or their institutions. This can create financial pressures and limit the diversity of published research.
Linking to Climate
Open access to research is vital for achieving the SDGs (see previous article). So, we need global standards for it. Climate change is a complex global issue that requires widespread collaboration and innovation. Without open access to research, it's hard to share knowledge and best practices across borders. This hinders our ability to address climate change effectively.
Linking to Health
Health research often presents additional barriers, particularly for women. Women often must research their health to make informed decisions. However, this research is often difficult to access, perpetuating health inequalities. Open access to health information is vital. It will address disparities and empower people to control their health.
