Affiliate marketing is always changing, and the best affiliates are the ones who are open to new ideas and ready to break out of the old ways of doing things. If you want to grow and stay ahead, you need to be willing to try fresh approaches and adapt to the latest trends.
That’s the key thing I took away from my time at AWC Bangkok last week. We had a really successful show there this year and a lot of the conversations I had at our stand left me thinking about what it takes to really stay ahead of the game in Affiliate Marketing
Over the past 20 years, I’ve seen countless affiliates transform their traffic acquisition strategies and reach new levels of success simply by being bold enough to try something different. In this newsletter, I want to share a few innovative approaches that can help you do the same and share some of the key take aways I had at AWC this year.?
Reimagine your content
It’s easy to stick to what you know —blog posts, social media captions, or email campaigns—but new formats can breathe life into your content. Video content is a perfect example. Platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube, and TikTok have become hotspots for user engagement, and short, engaging videos can make your message stick.
Start small. You don’t need a professional camera or advanced editing skills. A short clip shot on your phone, showing how a product works or explaining its benefits, can drive more interest than a standard blog post. If video isn’t your style, consider creating visual guides or infographics. People are drawn to content that’s easy to consume and share.
Tip: Don’t focus on perfection - focus on sharing genuine content that offers solutions to problems that your customers can bank on. Audiences value authenticity more than polished production.
Embrace Automation for Consistency
There’s always a lot to juggle in affiliate marketing: creating content, tracking performance, managing social media, and staying on top of offers. I spoke with a lot of publishers at AWC about AI and automation tools they’re using in their businesses right now just to get a sense for how much AI is being embraced in the affiliate industry right now. Un-surprisingly many affiliates were already integrating AI tools into their content production processes. There’s no doubt that automation tools can take some of the weight off and help you focus on strategy rather than routine tasks, freeing you up to have the time to look outward and consider ideas for innovation. Social media schedulers like Hootsuite or Buffer let you plan and post consistently without spending all your time online getting customers to find you. Even simple and effective stats and? tracking tools can be automated now to provide daily insights and regular performance updates.
Tip: Start with one or two tasks that eat up your time and find automation tools to handle them. You’ll be surprised at how much time you free up for creative work.
Leverage data to make better business decisions
Data-driven decisions are more effective than guesswork. Use analytics tools to understand what’s working and what’s not. A lot of affiliates we met are keen to understand where and how their audiences convert and want to see the full attribution funnel that customers have against each of the offers they provide.?
Brands that understand this and can provide this data are not only opening the door to transparent relationship building but they’re enabling publishers to get quality volumes of sales - faster too.
For example, Google Analytics can show you where your traffic is coming from and which pages convert best. Social media platforms now offer better insights into which posts get the most engagement and networks and stats aggregation tools can help you track every click to a converted sale.?
Use these tools in your affiliate business? to identify high-converting campaigns, optimize your strategies, and drop campaigns that aren’t delivering results. Regularly checking your data ensures you’re putting your efforts where they matter most.
Tip: Track small changes, like headlines or call-to-action buttons, to see how they impact conversions. These tweaks can often lead to big improvements.
Find the time to experiment with new channels
It’s tempting to stick to channels you know well, like organic search or email marketing, but trying new ones can unlock untapped potential. Paid ads, for example, allow you to target specific audiences with precision. I spoke with publishers who were doing incredible things with faceless instagram pages and communities too.?
Growth and Challenger Platforms like Bluesky, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok and other traditional channels are all innovating their platforms and offerings and therefore shouldn’t be discounted. Affiliates are constantly looking at how they can leverage new features that are great for promoting high-converting offers.
Affiliate campaigns can also benefit from exploring less crowded platforms. Pinterest, Reddit, or even niche communities, podcasts and forums can help you reach audiences who might not be active on mainstream channels.
Tip: Start small with testing one new channel for traffic each quarter and monitor your performance closely. If something works well, scale it up gradually.
Focus on building trust
Trust is the foundation of affiliate success. Most successful partnerships are long lasting because they are built on trust.?
People are more likely to click on your links and make a purchase when they feel you’re genuine and trustworthy. Being transparent about your affiliate partnerships and promoting products you believe in can help build that trust.
Adding personal touches to your content - like sharing your experience with a product - makes your recommendations feel more relatable. When you show you’re invested in your audience’s needs, they’re more likely to respond positively.
Tip: Always disclose your affiliate relationships. For one it’s a legal requirement but also remember that honesty builds loyalty with your customers too.
Think of Affiliate Marketing as a long term game plan
It’s easy to focus on the quick wins, and to keep doing the same things if they’re working for you, but remember this: The market is getting very competitive. There is a lot of opportunity still to be had, but from what I saw at the show this past week - a lot of competition too!?
Building a sustainable affiliate business means thinking beyond short-term gains. You have to be looking forward and seeing what new trends , offers and platforms can be leveraged to continue to grow your business. Partnering with a network that understands this - is your first step.?
Final thoughts
Innovation doesn’t have to mean starting something from scratch.?
Sometimes, small changes in how you approach your campaigns, content, or partnerships can lead to significant growth. The key is to stay open to trying new ideas, experimenting with different methods, and learning from your results.
Affiliate marketing is full of opportunities, and breaking away from old habits can help you tap into them.?
