Barnard Griffin Winery and Nutty Squirrel Gelato to Open New Locations at ‘The Schoolhouse District’ Project in Downtown Woodinville

Award-Winning Washington Winery Joins Robust Winery Line-Up in Expertly Curated Wine Walk Row

Locally-Owned Artisanal Gelato Shop Known for Small Batch Local Flavors Announces First Eastside Location

MainStreet Property Group LLC (www.mspgroupllc.com), a full-service Kirkland-based real estate developer, along with partner HAL Real Estate (www.halrealestate.com), today announced that two new tenants have been secured at ‘The Schoolhouse District’ mixed-use destination in downtown Woodinville: award-winning Washington winery Barnard Griffin and local gelato shop Nutty Squirrel. Retail space at ‘The Schoolhouse District’ is now fully leased, with the final retail partner to be announced soon.

Located at 13205 NE 175th St in ‘The Schoolhouse District’ project, Nutty Squirrel (www.nuttysquirrel.com) will open its space at the northeast end of the project, across from the Old Woodinville Schoolhouse, and Barnard Griffin (www.BarnardGriffin.com ) will open a 1,405 sq. ft. at the District’s ‘Wine Walk Row.’?

“An ice cream shop was something we always wanted to add to The Schoolhouse District to further delight our residents and the community, so we are excited to provide a place for Nutty Squirrel. We expect this scoop shop and all of its fun flavors to be a popular destination when it opens this summer,” said Kelly Price, CEO of MainStreet Property Group LLC. Price continued, “The addition of Barnard Griffin at Wine Walk Row is fabulous. The Barnard Griffin team has a wonderful legacy of producing high-quality wines from Washington State. It will be a treat to have them located at The Schoolhouse District for the Woodinville community and their raving fans throughout the region.”

Barnard Griffin: Quality, Consistency & Character from Washington’s Premier Family-Owned Winery

Founded in 1983 in Kennewick, WA with a small truckload of borrowed grapes and a rented cellar, Barnard Griffin is one of Washington state’s most enduring wineries producing award-winning, widely available wine that is easy-to-find on wine lists and grocery shelves.

“After many years of waiting for the right opportunity, we have finally found a home in Woodinville,” said Deborah Barnard, Co-Owner at Barnard Griffin. “We’re thrilled to soon be a part of the Woodinville wine scene with our new tasting room at The Schoolhouse District, following the opening of our tasting room at the Vancouver Waterfront in 2020.”

At its new space in ‘The Schoolhouse District,’ the company will highlight its limited-production Reserve lots that are solely available through the company’s wine clubs and its tasting rooms.

Featuring a tranquil yet inviting feel with bar front, chandeliers, and fused-glass installations designed/produced by Co-Owner Deborah Barnard—as well as materials beginning their second life such as patio furniture fashioned from single-use plastics—the new location is slated to open in Fall 2022.

“What a wonderful way to usher in our 40th year as a winery! We look forward to toasting our arrival with our club members – and can’t wait for the rest of the Westside to discover Barnard Griffin’s Reserves when we open this fall,” continued Barnard Griffin Co-Owner and Winemaker Rob Griffin.

Nutty Squirrel: Expertly-Crafted, Family-Friendly and Local-Centric Italian Ice Cream

As a woman-owned, family-operated small business, Nutty Squirrel was founded in Seattle in 2011. Working with local dairy and fresh ingredients, the company is known for its expertly-crafted, local-centric gelato with a frequently-changing menu of exquisite homemade flavors crafted one small batch at a time.

With existing locations in Seattle’s Phinney Ridge and Magnolia neighborhoods, the company’s first Eastside location is slated to open in June 2022—and will offer delicious artisanal gelato and sorbetto made with wholesome ingredients in both traditional and trendy rotating flavors. “We like to have fun with our selection of gelato offerings. Certain flavors like our ‘Antep Pistachio’ have a ‘cult following’ and are always on the menu. But we introduce new flavors frequently, so there is always a fun surprise no matter how often you visit our shops. Most of our gelato flavors are gluten free, and we always include vegan options.” Said Tolga Seymen, Executive Chef, and co-owner of Nutty Squirrel.

The new location will be designed to reflect the company’s philosophy behind their gelato-making of refined simplicity using old world materials in a modern way. “We were drawn to The Schoolhouse District for its central location, and the beautifully designed outdoor community spaces. Our shop will be small, just like the traditional gelato shops you see in Italy. For seating, we will activate the courtyard in front of the shop,” said Alev Seymen, Architect, and CEO of Nutty Squirrel.

“Having worked with the Chamber and local businesses like Chateau Ste. Michelle, and other surrounding Woodinville-area events, Nutty Squirrel has had a presence here for years,” said Tolga Seymen. “We care deeply about community and culture. Through our new scoop shop, we are so excited to further strengthen our local ties and contributions to this growing community in a very unique way.”

The Schoolhouse District: A Destination Experience

The Schoolhouse District project in the heart of downtown Woodinville reached its initial phase of completion in Fall 2021.

Adjacent to the downtown soccer fields and City Hall, The Schoolhouse District provides a first-of-its-kind mixed-use destination. It includes a 264-unit residential community District Flats; the fully-restored historic Schoolhouse No. 23—future home of Walla Walla Steak Co. & Crossbuck Brewing; Wine Walk Row with nine curated wine tasting and retail spaces; and additional ground-level retail space leased to local businesses, including Ethan Stowell’s Ballard Pizza Kitchen and Lisa Dupar’s Café Dupar.
