Bare Minimum Mondays, Grumpy Quitting, and Rage Applying, Oh My!

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Workplace Trends of Tomorrow

Over the rainbow, and many, many miles east of nowhere, lies the Magical Land of Oz. Just as The Wizard of Oz transported viewers in 1939 to a technicolor dreamland that felt like a dazzling glimpse into the future, today's workplace is undergoing a transformation that would make even the Great and Powerful Oz take notice.

What started with The Great Resignation has evolved into an ever-growing list of terms and phrases to describe active workplace trends. Check-out TikTok to see how popular these trends have become. Many of these phrases have become part of our vernacular, and the others are on the rise.

Here are the top 10 based on views...

10. Shift shock: 14,900 views

9. Resenteeism: 30,800 views

8. Boomerang Employee: 43,000 views

7. Career cushioning: 662,700 views

6. Bare minimum Mondays: 2.9 million views

5. Quiet hiring: 5.3 million views

4. Rage applying: 6 million views

3. Quiet firing: 19.9 million views

2. Act your wage: 451.1 million views

1. Quiet quitting: 762.3 million views

Number one, Quiet Quitting, has a few offshoots including Grumpy Quitting, Loud Quitting, Quiet Vacationing, Quiet Cutting and more recently Quiet Staying.

I'd say a trend that has close to a billion views on TikTok (a platform that is known more for makeup tips and trending dance moves rather than professional advice and content) is worth paying attention to, wouldn't you?

The point is, while we are hanging out on LinkedIn, a tremendous swath of the professional workforce is spending their down time expressing their views on other platforms. Within those platforms is a dense amount of data and information to help us not only understand generations that are new to the workforce or growing into the next generation of leaders, but also how to effectively prepare for (and predict) the future to understand what work might look like when these younger generations are leading. In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, leaders face a stark choice: innovate and adapt to the future workforce, or risk joining the corporate fossil record alongside the dinosaurs of yesteryear.

Decoding the Generational DNA of Modern Workplace Trends??

Bridging the gap between generations is certainly one of the keys to innovation in business and career strategy. You can see the vast difference in priorities between the two platforms...

While I don't see #corporatebaddie ?? ranking on LinkedIn's top trends anytime soon, it remains important for leaders to understand these trends and get ahead of them. This is critical for a few reasons...

  • Early Detection: Social media often reveals workplace trends before they hit mainstream news or academic studies. By monitoring platforms like TikTok, leaders can anticipate and prepare for emerging issues.
  • Employee Sentiment: These trends often reflect real concerns and desires of the workforce. Understanding them helps in creating more satisfying work environments.
  • Talent Attraction and Retention: Awareness of trends helps in crafting policies and benefits that appeal to current and potential employees.
  • Competitive Advantage: Companies that adapt quickly to new trends can position themselves as forward-thinking employers of choice.
  • Risk Management: Some trends (like quiet quitting) can impact productivity and morale. Early awareness allows for proactive measures.
  • Employer Branding: Understanding trends helps in shaping a company's image to align with what modern workers value.

Crystal Ball Not Required: Future Work Trends You Can See Right Now ??

While I can't predict what catchy phrases will accompany some of these forward looking trends, they are coming. I'll leave branding each one to the influencers on TikTok. Take a look at what's on the horizon at a workplace near you...

  • AI Collaboration: Integration of AI assistants in daily work tasks to enhance productivity and creativity.

Example: AI writing assistants that generate initial drafts or provide real-time suggestions during document creation.

Company: Jasper.ai offers AI-powered content creation tools used by companies like Airbnb and IBM to streamline their marketing content production.

  • Skills Based Hiring: Focus on specific skills and competencies rather than traditional qualifications or degrees.

Example: Coding bootcamp graduates being hired for software development roles based on project portfolios.

Company: IBM has implemented a skills-first approach, removing degree requirements for many positions and focusing on capabilities demonstrated through coding challenges and portfolios.

  • Four-Day Work Week: Companies adopting shorter work weeks without reducing pay to improve work-life balance and productivity.

Example: Employees working Monday to Thursday with Fridays off, maintaining the same output and pay.

Company: Kickstarter implemented a four-day work week in 2022, reporting increased efficiency and employee satisfaction.

  • Holographic Meetings: Use of advanced holographic technology to make virtual meetings more immersive and interactive.

Example: Team members in different locations interacting with 3D holographic projections of each other and shared virtual objects.

Company: Microsoft is developing "Mesh for Microsoft Teams," which aims to bring holographic experiences to virtual meetings.

  • Gig Economy 2.0 : Evolution of the gig economy to include more specialized, high-skill roles on a project basis.

Example: Companies hiring expert consultants or specialized technicians for short-term, high-impact projects.

Company: Toptal connects companies with top freelance software developers, designers, and business consultants for project-based work.

  • Wellness-Centric Workplaces: Increased focus on employee wellbeing, including mental health and work-life balance.

Example: Companies offering mental health days, on-site wellness facilities, and comprehensive wellness programs.

Company: Asana provides employees with perks like free executive coaching, mindfulness programs, and unlimited paid time off to support overall wellbeing.

  • Lifelong Learning Culture: Emphasis on continuous skill development and learning as a core part of work.

Example: Companies providing learning stipends or dedicated time for employees to acquire new skills.

Company: Amazon's "Career Choice" program offers to pre-pay up to 95% of tuition for courses in high-demand fields, even if they're not relevant to a career at Amazon.

  • Climate-Conscious Careers: Growing demand for roles focused on sustainability and environmental impact.

Example: Creation of new positions like "Chief Sustainability Officer" or "Environmental Impact Analyst" across various industries.

Company: Patagonia has long been a leader in this area, with roles dedicated to environmental activism and sustainable business practices throughout their organization.

Other trends that have started will continue including a focus on DEI, flexibility with work schedules, location of work as we move closer to virtual workforces, and career ecosystems rather than linear one-employer/one job careers.

Conclusion

I don't know how I feel about TikTok. One day I have it on my phone and the next I remove it because I'm worried China is watching me. ??

What I do know is that Social Media is here to stay. Regardless of whether TikTok is removed from our reach due to US legislation, something else will replace it. And it's a hotbed of content, trends, data and info on what multiple generations have on their mind. Boomers and GenX can hold on to 'what was' for dear life, but the future is pulling 'what was' out of their sweaty clutches. So rather than fight the good fight, why not embrace the future?

At the conclusion of Night at the Museum 3, made in 2014, Teddy Roosevelt (played by Robin Williams) says to Larry (played by Ben Stiller) "It's time for your next adventure!" Larry responds, "I don't really know what I'm going to do tomorrow." Roosevelt says, "How wonderful."

There is uncertainty in the future. But it is that uncertainty there is hope, magic, and wonder. So why not embrace it, lean into it, be innovative and run towards it.

If you want to be truly inspired today, check out this video on TikTok, it's beautiful. You are missed Robin Williams!
