Bare Minimum Habits of Content Creators

What Makes a Good Content Creator?

I slide out of bed early Thursday morning and pull on comfortable clothes for my daily walk. Twisting my hair into a ponytail and pulling it through the back of my cap, then buckling on my fanny pack and popping on my wireless headset, I search on my phone for a podcast to educate me for the next hour.

I choose The Online Marketing Made Easy podcast with Amy Porterfield #484: Hindsight is 20/20: 3 Things I Wish I Did When I First Started Out. Amy is detailing the top three things she should have started earlier in her career that would have made the most significant difference for her business.

Her number one recommendation? Consistent content production and distribution.

I do a little dance and pump my fist when I hear that.

That means if I do nothing else but create and distribute content every week, I'm moving forward with my business.

It's validating to hear this perspective from a successful online entrepreneur. Amy Porterfield's advice for anyone starting an online business is to publish a weekly podcast episode and a newsletter and to do it consistently.

This is great advice, and it sets the bare minimum bar for us as content entrepreneurs.

What Should a Content Creator Not Do?

We all have so many obligations keeping us from working at our home-based businesses every day. It's important to know what the minimum task list is for each week so we can keep our momentum going even when we go on vacation, family members get sick, or business partners get busy with other projects.

In my world, my business partner, Toby, is going on vacation this week. My Women Conquer Business podcast partner, Jen, is swamped with her own projects, leaving me to do the podcast solo. My husband is going through his second round of chemo and I've got to support him and keep my family fed.

Life can be overwhelming and it would be so easy to let content creation slide.

But don't give up!

I have a content consistency framework and schedule that I follow so I don't lose momentum. I produce three livestreams and two podcasts each week, a blog post, this LinkedIn newsletter, and an email update. I find time to work on new digital products, like my Livecast Lifestyle course. I also book guests for my podcast and appear as a guest on other podcasts.

I love creating content each week. If I gave it up, I would feel like I lost an important part of myself.

How Do I Improve My Content and My Life?

Last week I told you we have two live shows,?News and Views, and?Messages and Methods. One is an experiment in growing an audience and the other is about building your business with content marketing. Last week we talked about building an online course, using my experience as a guide.

We have added travel vlogging to our News and Views channel and Toby is getting into boating on a budget. He purchased a Sea Eagle FishSkiff 16 and a Tohatsu 5HP outboard motor. Last week we visited Santa Fe, Abiquiu, Taos, and Velarde, New Mexico, and shared our adventures with our audience.

It may seem crazy to add on the time and effort it takes to travel, shoot and edit drone and video footage to our already busy schedule. But it also adds to our enjoyment and memories.

There's nothing more disappointing than getting to the end of the year and looking back to see we didn't go anywhere or do anything different or fun.

Creating these travel vlogs and videos pushes us to make memories. It also puts us in situations where we can help people.

When we visited Santa Fe, we were walking through the La Fonda hotel when we heard an elderly woman cry out, "Help!" She had fallen and needed our help!

On our way home from Abiquiu, we stopped to take a photo along the road on a hot August afternoon and ended up helping a desperate woman and her two small children change a flat tire!

If you want to hear more about these adventures and see our videos and photos, you can check out our News and Views YouTube channel.

We love to help!
