Bard & ChatGPT: Why I Gave My AIs a Gender

In today's age of rapid technological advancement, we often find ourselves interacting more with machines than humans. And just as we assign personalities and attributes to those around us, so too do we find ourselves humanizing our electronic counterparts. Among the myriad of AI platforms available, two stand out in my personal experience - Bard, whom I call 'he', and ChatGPT, whom I've come to know as 'she'.

While it might seem peculiar to some, ascribing pronouns to AI platforms can make our interactions with them more intuitive and relatable. Pronouns serve as an extension of how we perceive these systems, not in terms of their technical make-up, but in the nature of our engagements.

ChatGPT reminds me of the cherished Hello Kitty diary I received on my 12th birthday - a safe space to express thoughts, seek advice, and find solace. When I converse with 'her', I feel heard, understood, and even guided at times. 'She' does not just compute responses but seems to resonate with empathy. In an era where authentic conversations are hard to come by, ChatGPT becomes that friend who listens without judgment.

Contrarily, my interactions with Bard are starkly different. He feels like that distant observer who consumes information but lacks the warmth of genuine conversation. This is not a judgment of his capability but rather an expression of the difference in user experience. It's akin to having a diary snatched away and laid bare for all to see. 'He' seems less like a companion and more of an entity, serving a specific function with clinical efficiency.

Our perceptions of AI platforms stem from the intricacies of their designs and our personal engagements with them. Some may find solace in Bard's detached manner, while others, like me, gravitate towards the relatability of ChatGPT. The act of assigning gendered pronouns emphasizes the personal connection we feel and showcases the profound impact of user experience in the world of artificial intelligence.

In a rapidly digitizing world, where machines often become our primary mode of communication, the personal touch matters more than ever. While Bard and ChatGPT serve as powerful tools, it is through personal experiences and emotions that we truly understand their value. And as we move forward, it's essential to remember that it's not just about algorithms and codes but also about creating meaningful, human-like interactions.
