?? NEWS: DWF launches innovative SQE training programme in Northern Ireland

DWF has launched a new route to legal qualification in Northern Ireland in partnership with 英国电信集团 and BARBRI . Starting in 2024, an initial?group?of six trainees will commence a unique training programme that includes mentoring from lawyers in the Belfast offices of both DWF and?BT Group. One trainee will also complete a six-month secondment with the telecommunications entity.

?? INDUSTRY REPORTS: Most in-house solicitors and law firm associates are now female

The Solicitors Regulation Authority released demographical data of in-house solicitors, as recorded by solicitors through their mySRA account. Though it’s not a compulsory field, they have enough data to report that:

  • 61% of in-house solicitors are female
  • 68% of in-house solicitors in the public sector are female
  • 57% of in-house solicitors in the private sector are female

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that for the first time, there are more women in associate roles at US law firms than men. The figure today is 50.3%, up from 38% in 1991 when the National Association for Law Placement started tracking.

?? Events and outreach in 2024

As we embark on the new year, the University Partnerships team is proud to be supporting a number of upcoming Higher Education events. This week, we will be at our partners Brunel University of London for an SQE information session and to exhibit at the Law Careers and Placements Fair .

In February, University Partnerships Director Christopher Howard will be leading a session on Intellectual Property and Cybercrime as part of The Association of Law Teachers (ALT) day conference on Teaching Law and Technology, hosted by our colleagues at the London South Bank University , and in conjunction with the newly-formed International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) .

Finally, in April, BARBRI is proud to be a sponsor of the ALT’s annual conference , hosted by 英国威尔士斯旺西大学 , and will be leading a panel on Innovation in Law School Curricula.

Amir Paz-Fuchs may well be the first and only head of law to have completed the SQE himself. The Law Gazette caught up with Amir, the Head of the School of Law at the University of Sussex and a professor of Law and Social Justice, who shares his first-hand insights into the SQE, BARBRI’s pedagogy, and rethinking the traditional university educational approach.
