Barbie Movie

Barbie Movie

Barbie as a movie astounded me as to how one can use an existing product and expand its franchise by venturing into different mediums. Not only did the movie remind us about Barbies and connected us with our old-time feelings, but it also made it relevant to the current generation. If there could have been a way to address all the faults that could have been associated with the product – this was the best way. They say in thee trailer that “if you have disliked Barbie while growing up this film is for you”. That’s where they capture the audience that won’t go. Some might just go to prove a point that no we still don’t like Barbie.

Marketing strategy – From google turning pink when one searches for Barbie to folks coordinating in pink to go and see the film Barbie’s marketing campaign was a hit. As I went to see Barbie in the waiting are just by the dressing choice, I could figure out that the men and women in pinks are here to watch Barbie. And these were the non-materialistic marketing methods where we are not talking about an air bnb Barbie house and other things. Releasing with Oppenheimer also gave it a slight edge because many influencers promoted going to Barbie by almost mocking the film that one doesn’t need brains to go and see the film.

Puns – The small puns and jabs at Barbie and Mattel keep the movie interesting and playful. So much so that you almost get defensive for Mattel, well at least I did.

Songs – The songs used in the films are a vamped-up version of the original Barbie films and advertisement incorporating the music of today and adding a hint of woman empowerment to it.

Dresses showcase – This personally made me very happy as the Barbies wore the clothes that were designed for the Barbies of our time and when I saw those printed pants… my I felt bad about throwing away my Barbie and I wanted to go and get a new one!

Barbie world – The Barbie world was created baring in mind all the way people use Barbies, walking on toes, flying from houses to cars because Barbies don’t use stairs! Stroke of brilliance, isn’t it? The Barbie world is filled with logics like these and seeing a real-life Barbie out and about I must say was refreshing.

Ken problem – The film also addressed the fact that Ken without Barbie had no identity although it never had an effect on the children playing with the dolls as per my understanding but still if a toy is striving for perfection in the societal norms by showing power and equality for women it should do the same for men.

Depression Barbie – Another great thing was the addition of new types of Barbies like the depression Barbie, the fact that they related the feelings of the owner of the Barbie to the Barbie itself was a great way of showing connection between the two and how the owner too is affecting the doll.

Deformed Barbie and Discontinued Barbie – Through the film they shed light on how and why the Barbies were discontinued and what they went through when they were not played with properly resulting into weird Barbie and discontinued Barbie’s and Kens.

Way ahead for Barbie franchise – Through this movie Mattel as per my understanding has tried to kickstart the Barbie merchandise by speaking about the Ken World or the Kendom, the other possible variations of Barbies that could be more relatable.

The idea of the film was to understand that Mattel and Ruth had a certain vision for the world and that they wanted to create a perfect equal world with the help of an empowered world of Barbies.
