For many law grads, this is the time that really counts... studying and preparing for the Bar Exam! It's been many years since I sat for the Bar but I remember it perfectly, the intention with which I planned and studied, and how I kept my mindset strong and focused. This morning, I shared an email of tips and guidance with our LLM grads at George Mason University - Antonin Scalia Law School that I'd love to post here as well, trusting that it will reach the people it needs to reach!
?
1. STAY FOCUSED & ORGANIZED
??- Create a study schedule that works for you and stick to it as much as possible.
??- Break down your study materials into manageable chunks and set realistic goals for each study session.
??- Use whatever study methods have already been working for you, this isn’t the time to experiment and come up with something new.
?
2. PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE
??- Remember to take breaks and prioritize self-care throughout your study period. You might want to add this to your calendar!
??- Make time for activities that bring you joy and help you recharge, whether it's exercising, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in hobbies.
??- When I was studying for the bar, I made sure to have a moment of movement every day, whether it was a walk around the block with a friend, going to the gym, or taking a yoga class.
??- I also tried to have lunch or dinner with others since that was a moment I could connect with others that didn’t disrupt my study schedule.
?
3. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
??- Trust in your abilities and the knowledge you've acquired throughout your legal education and career.

??- Remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments whenever doubt creeps in, and know that you are capable of overcoming any challenge that comes your way.
??- Write out some mantras that support you during this time. For example – “I am learning everything I need to pass the bar.” “I am confident in my ability to succeed.” “I have what it takes to become licensed.” Write your own mantras, read the mantras out loud every day and really believe them!
?
4. SEEK SUPPORT WHEN NEEDED
??- Don't hesitate to reach out for support from friends, family, classmates, and faculty members.
??- Whether you need someone to listen, provide encouragement, or offer study tips, know that you're not alone on this journey.
??- And along the same lines, do not take part in conversations where fellow bar takers are only complaining and being negative. Make that promise to yourself right now!
?
5. VISUALIZE SUCCESS
??- Take a moment each day to visualize yourself succeeding on the bar exam and achieving your goals. Think of a time you achieved something really important and how you felt. Call in those feelings and that excitement as you visualize seeing your results of passing the bar.
??- Visualizing success can help you stay motivated and focused as you work towards your ultimate goal of becoming a licensed attorney.
??- This is how you make sure your mindset is in the right place for this important exam. Mindset is a key component to success!
?
Remember, the bar exam is just one step on your path to a successful legal career. While the studying may feel intense at times, know that it is temporary, and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Stay disciplined, stay positive, and stay focused on your goal!
