Joe Woodland, the inventor said while playing on Miami Beach sand:
“I remember I was thinking about dots and dashes ( similar to Morse code ) when I poked my four fingers into the sand and, for whatever reason—I didn’t know—I pulled my hand toward me and I had four lines. I said ‘Golly! Now I have four lines and they could be wide lines and narrow lines, instead of dots and dashes. Now I have a better chance of finding the doggone thing.’ Then, only seconds later, I took my four fingers—they were still in the sand—and I swept them round into a circle”
?
This was the starting point of bar code, which we often use now. Joe Woodland (here) and Bernard Silver filed a patent in 1949, which was granted in 1952.?The brilliance of its simplicity and its far-reaching consequences for modern existence were not recognized until many years later.

3 年Surprisingly many great innovations such as this one have very humble & simple stories behind them - in contrast, some really silly ideas are seen to be spinning some fictitious fanta-fabulous BS these days ! Nice post Vinod Dahake.
