The escalating occurrence of suicide among individuals is an alarming and concerning issue. We are currently witnessing the harsh reality of an economic recession, which has taken a significant toll on people’s lives. Regardless of the severity of the challenges we face, ending one’s life should never be the sole recourse.
There are moments when people may find solace in the idea of escaping their problems by falling into a deep slumber, free from bullies, emotional trauma, troubles, and the weight of their issues. However, it’s essential to consider whether sharing their problems with others could offer at least a partial solution. The mere act of being alive is a precious gift, and it’s vital to remember that where there’s life, there’s hope. It’s understandable that some individuals might fear becoming the subject of ridicule if they share their problems. Nevertheless, it’s important to recognize that everyone’s circumstances are unique, and help is available in various forms. It's truly saddening to learn about recent instances where individuals, burdened by financial debt, have chosen suicide, leaving their family members to bear the aftermath. Nobody should ever be pushed to such an extreme point. Taking one’s life is a decision that carries significant moral and legal consequences. It’s important to spread awareness about the importance of seeking help and support, as there are resources available to assist individuals in their times of need.
The rising number of reported suicide cases in Nigeria is a deeply concerning trend that calls for urgent attention and action. It reflects a complex set of issues, including economic hardships, social pressures, mental health challenges, and the need for improved support systems.
The statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal the gravity of the situation. In 2016, Nigeria recorded more than 17,000 suicides, making it the country with the highest suicide rate in Africa at the time. These numbers underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle this issue.
The legal framework, as enshrined in Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, unequivocally emphasizes the right to life. It underscores that no individual should have their life taken away intentionally or unintentionally, except as a consequence of a court-sanctioned death sentence for a criminal offense they have been found guilty of. This provision reinforces the sanctity of human life and the duty of the state to protect it.
In addressing the growing concern of suicide, it is imperative to foster an environment that encourages open conversations about mental health, provides accessible mental health services, and combats the stigmatization associated with seeking help. Additionally, economic and social support systems need to be reinforced to assist those who are grappling with financial and emotional challenges. There are cases in which individuals burdened by debt consider suicide, but later, they reconsider and opt to confront their financial challenges head-on.
?There is no doubt that people in excruciating pain due to a serious illness may consider suicide. What if the ailing individual contemplating suicide ultimately experiences a recovery? However, intentionally ending one’s life is not a compassionate or dignified way to face death.
Suicide prevention efforts should involve collaboration between government agencies, healthcare providers, mental health professionals, non-governmental organizations, and the broader community. Together, they can work towards reducing the alarming rates of suicide and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to seek help and live a life free from the threat of suicide.
