Bangladesh's Development Journey: Youth Empowerment and BRAC's Impact

Bangladesh has emerged as the fastest-growing economy in the Asia-Pacific region, with a remarkable growth rate exceeding 8 percent, despite being classified as one of the 'least developed countries' by the UN. The nation's progress can be attributed to significant social advancements, including women empowerment, gender equality, and improved access to education since its independence in 1971. This progress was crucial in lifting millions out of poverty and hunger, considering the historical challenges of violence and deprivation the country faced. Celebrating 50 years of independence in 2021, Bangladesh successfully transformed into a 'Digital Bangladesh,' with plans to evolve into a 'Smart Bangladesh,' emphasizing an e-economy and digital transactions.

Youth Population and Unemployment Challenge:

With a current population of 165 million, Bangladesh's youth aged 15-29 constitutes one-fourth of the total, approximately 45.9 million. This young population holds immense potential and vitality, making them the key architects of Bangladesh's future. However, the country faces the challenge of high-educated unemployment, especially among graduates. The youth unemployment rate doubled between 2010 and 2017, emphasizing the need for enhanced skills and technical knowledge among the youth.

Role of BRAC in Bangladesh's Development:

BRAC, initially involved in building the healthcare backbone in collaboration with the government during the 80s, has grown into one of the world's largest development organizations. Operating across 11 countries in Africa and Asia, BRAC's holistic approach to development encompasses microfinance, education, healthcare, legal services, gender equity, and more. BRAC's commitment to women's empowerment as influential change-makers has resulted in reaching 14 million people in ultra-poverty and graduating 15 million students from its schools.

In response to the youth unemployment challenge, BRAC initiated the Skills Development Programme in 2011, aiming to create inclusive and sustainable economic development for disadvantaged and marginalized youth. A pilot program called the 'BRAC Institute of Skill Development' (BRAC-ISD) was introduced in 2017, offering market-driven skills training in sectors such as construction, hospitality, IT, graphic design, and electrical engineering. BRAC-ISD provided one-to-one and hands-on training in highly modern workshops, facilitated by CBT&A certified trainers, and covered essential aspects like employability skills, occupational safety & health, career counseling, industrial attachment, and job placement. The certification received both national accreditation from the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) and international accreditation from City & Guilds.

The combination of Bangladesh's youth potential and BRAC's impactful initiatives has played a significant role in the country's development. With a focus on youth empowerment, particularly young women, and addressing the challenges of unemployment, Bangladesh stands poised for a prosperous future. BRAC's innovative approach continues to contribute to various sectors, making it a crucial partner in achieving the nation's sustainable development goals.
