BANF Spotlight: Dr. Donghun Kim
Today we’re in conversation with Dr Donghun Kim, one of BANF’s leading technical experts, let’s hear a bit more from him and his passion for the work that BANF is doing.
1)????What led you to joining the BANF team?
The reason why I joined BANF is that I was fascinated by the concept of the road profiler. As an inertial sensor specialist, I am always eager to expand the usage of the inertial sensor beyond the current technology.
For example, I would like to put a small accelerometer sensor on the internal tire to inspect the condition of the road. However, it cannot be a feasible technology without a constant power source. The power system is the crucial part to maintain sensor operation. At that time, I realized that BANF has the special technology to supply wireless energy to the remote sensing area. So, I decided to join to BANF to make big synergy with wireless power and inertial sensor engineering.
2)????How would you describe your role and what do you like about it? How does it challenge you?
At BANF, my role is the CTO. For now, I think the key role of the CTO is making the transition from imagination to realization. I have a lot of experience in the defense area. Developing defense systems and road profilers have a lot of similar aspects. Both are operated under limited resources but are required for high-quality sensor measurement. Yes, it is the most challenging task for our road profiler. I am very happy to experience this challenging problem that nobody has experienced before.

3)????Why is BANF’s technology so important?
Okay. In the beginning, God said that “let there be light: and there was light.” Inside the tire is comparable to a world of darkness. The tire sensor will be the first light that can illuminate that darkness. Through the smart tire profiler, we can get information on roads and vehicles constantly. As I already mentioned, these have not been achieved by other sensor systems. So, BANF’s smart profiler can be said to be a technology that will revolutionize autonomous truck driving for 24-hour operation safely. In other words, BANF's technology is a strong light on a dark road to begin a new future.
4)????What’s your personal vision of the future for BANF?
Personally, in a few years, I would like our road profiler currently being developed by BANF to be implemented on a single chip. Then all autonomous trucks can be equipped with an intelligent road profiler at a lower cost and minimum power consumption. In other words, the autonomous truck has a brain at every tire. I think it guarantees safer driving to make a better future.
