BANANA PLANTED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LEAVES AND FRUITS

In south India it is a custom and tradition to eat rice in banana leaf since thousands of years in the past. In hotel and restaurant generally foods are served in fresh banana leaves

In one acre land 4800 banana plants are planted with following crop geometry

Plant spacing on either side is 1.8 meter

Each pit was planted with 4 suckers . Each plant produce 35 leaves in about 6  months duration

Total number of leaves 4800 plants * 35 leaves = 1.68 lac leaves

Each leaf is sold @ Rs.2

Total income out of leaf production alone is Rs.3.36 Lac

When the plant reaches 9 months duration since planting , harvesting of leaves is stopped and atleast one banana tree in each pit is allowed to produce and develop fruit bunches

Total number of fruit bunches produced per acre is 1200

Each bunch is sold@ Rs.250 at farm gate

Total income from sale proceed of fruit bunches alone is Rs.3 Lac

So total income realised from sale proceed of both leaves and fruit bunches is 6.36 lac per acre
