Ban on ChatGPT in Schools Shortsighted
No sooner than ChatGPT started making headlines, a handful of public schools quickly responded by banning its use by students.?Some academics welcomed these bans, likely due to relief that their jobs were secure for the time being. However, those who are open to new ideas and understand the disruptive nature of technology simply shrugged and continued to ask ChatGPT challenging questions to push its capabilities.

The reality is that responsible usage of effective technology always prevails, and always will. This is evidenced by technologies now vital to education, that were also once banned.
So, instead of implementing bans without even knowing what’s being banned, educators and administrators would better serve students (and themselves) by seeking a deeper understanding of how technologies like ChatGPT can be used to improve the learning experience.?We should be leaning into our responsibility to teach students how to get the most out of AI.?Perhaps start by educating our teachers on how to leverage AI to assist with lightening their burdensome workloads. ?
When people have effective tools at their disposal to problem solve, to distinguish important questions from unimportant ones, and to find quality and timely answers; everyone wins. So, let us not demonize certain sources of our wisdom, but rather celebrate that we continue to create new ways to acquire more of it.?

2 年I agree 100% David and have preached the same. What is the end goal? Learning. How you get there will evolve. I’m not advocating cheating, I’m advocating adoption and change.

2 年In my opinion, history is littered with instances of resistance to an eminent change...exposing people to creatively use available tools and make a paradigm shift in the way they approach problems is a better approach, because bear in mind, unlike in history AI is getting smarter by the day, so pushing it aside will diminish our ability to co-exist when eventually we have to accept and adopt

2 年This reminds me of math exams when the teacher would say, “ No calculator’s allowed”. Why are calculators a threat to learning? I can see educators thinking that ChatGPT is threat to critical thinking.

2 年Banning AI tools such as chatgpt is like banning Google 20 years ago. Total bans of AI are a sign of fear of the future. I think it should be banned on certain projects that are meant to promote creativity or problem solving, but a total ban is a disservice to their students and only prolonging the inevitable. Besides tools are already being built to distinguish between AI and human created work... https://twitter.com/OpenAI/status/1620484691462852609?t=PXybsuZGfOCdKwUrf7K5oQ&s=19
