Ball Security: PREACH or TEACH?

Should we PREACH ball security or should we TEACH ball security? Basically a rhetorical question because all coaches will agree that we ultimately want to see the results of our coaching points on the field. our desire is to see what we coach and preach put into action on the field. We want to see a QB slide up in the pocket to avoid the rush, check down to their back and see the running back making defenders miss in amazing fashion like Kalen Ballage below. Can you see what we need to change in the video?
When we hear the announcers say "PREACH Ball Security" he could be talking about any team in any given year. What we need to do to TEACH Ball Security is learn from this and emphasis and train a couple points from this video: 1. Ball in outside arm away from Defense. 2. Teach the ball carrier to keep the ball TIGHT to their body with a training ball that requires a measurable amount of pressure and gives you a 'Beep' as an awareness that the ball is secured. 3. Can you see how the player is holding the ball in their hand? Split finger? Wrist and Elbow close to body? Teaching points that a HIGHandTIGHT teaching football will measure and signal when correct.
It is NOT whether we are PREACHING ball security, it is whether we are TEACHING the technique with a device that will create a need and awareness of technique ultimately helping the player create a habit where they will be different in the future. We constantly remind our players that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result. We need to change HOW we teach our drills with WHAT we use to create their awareness of the ball position otherwise we are doing the same thing over and over expecting that the player will never fumble.
We would love to help your favorite player or program or coach TEACH ball security with these teaching footballs. We want to help you with TEACHing; use Promo Code 'TEACH' when you check out for samples at cost to change the way you teach starting this fall.
