"Is Ball possession like a rocking chair; keeping you busy but getting you nowhere?"
So much is written and discussed in the Media about playing on Ball possession and that it doesn't get you any where. Teams play one counter attack and win the game. Does that mean that that particular team was better?
Please come on.....Dutch Football is criticised by being obsessed by ball passion and not winning anything. At this moment Dutch Football is in Crisis. We are almost sure not to qualify for the Euro 2016.
I remembered that International Spanish Football was no where on the world map when i was growing up. The last Decade or so it flourished because of what?
Yes; "Ball possession tiki takka football" , as the media calls it. All finding its origin in Dutch football. Barcelona thanks his beautiful football because of Dutch legend Johan Cruijff and his disciples Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola that it is playing as it doing today. Trust me non of these Coaches are Horny or get aroused because of ball possession. The media made up these labels and uses them in good times like its art, and in bad times its like a sin to have more ball possession than the opponent. So stating that too much ball possession is the reason for the decline of Dutch Football is big Bull$%^&.
So what is going wrong? Or is it just a fase, a bad generation?
My analyses lead me to the following reasons and conclusions. Holland always had great great strikers and attackers. Cruijff, Van Basten, Gullet, van Nistelrooy, Bergkamp and Kluivert to name a few. Kluivert was in my opinion the last generation that showed to be "world class". He ended his career in 2004 if i am correct. The last decade we did not have top players any more. van Persie is a great player but i don't rank him in that same category.
Holland at this moment has 1 world class attacker in the international competitions. Arjan Robben. Holland always had in each European Top club a Dutch player. The last 10 years this had a huge decline. We don't have top players any more. Memphis Depaay might be a new top player but that remains to be seen first.
Dutch Footballs decline has 3 reasons in my opinion:
1) Top talents are leaving Holland too early, at young age to European clubs where they hardly get the chance to develop the way the can in Holland. In top leagues talents don't get weekly a chance to play in a good strong league. Before in Holland top talents left Holland after they won something and developed them selves on a good level and get some experience. This was always around the age of 23-24. Now they leave at age 12-13-14-15-16.
2) Top players from Holland that played in international leagues are not returning any more to Holland after they finished their career. They don't bring their experience back to teach the youngsters. This is a huge lost of experience, and in my opinion a very decisive element.
3) We kill creativity by over organising our academies. Too theoretical, and too much is done for the youth players. If you want to stimulate and develop creativity you need to give freedom and let players explore and not giving the solution all ready up front. It's over organised. Humans are not robots. There has to be flesh and blood.
Conclusion:
We loose the best talents on the basic development level and don't get back the experience from above. The ones that know what it is to play on the highest level. This element of education is a big big problem. Like a father teaches his son about life!! So we are left with average in academies that are "over organised". They kill freedom and creativity. This what was Holland always was famous for.
At this moment the Dutch national team doesn't have any top defenders, an average goal keeper and decent midfield and forwards. This generation is in my opinion below international standards. I don't know what the future will bring but looking at the last 10 years then i don't see any bright future for us.
