Baldwin + Barry Full Home Remodel

The phone rang one Spring day in 2022 from a Chicago area code. Of course, I had to answer it. On the line was a couple relocating from Chicago to Ann Arbor and curious about our feedback on the property they were looking to purchase. After 15 minutes or so we discussed their ideal remodeling budget (which was -3x what it would end up being in the end) and anticipated start date. Once hearing my transparent response on budget and timeline realities, we agreed to schedule a time to see the property. Clearly it was a great call and fit for both parties because we completed the project in the Fall of 2023. Welcome to Baldwin and Barry.

This home was built in 1930 and had not been updated an inch since the late 70s at best. With no central heating or air, poor insulation and rotting wood windows the efficiency plan on this remodel was of the upmost importance. Inside the home we gutted it down to the studs and the only original features that remain today are the foundation, exterior framing, exterior cladding, 3 staircases and 2 interior walls with the original plaster.

Our rough in stage took 4 months beginning in October and ending in the dead of winter in January before we could officially close the walls up. With everything being brand new we had to opportunity to take our time and nail every detail the first time while catching mistakes before they became a problem. Well worth it IMO.

Beginning on the first floor we created an incredibly open kitchen with oversized island leading into the living space where pizza movie nights are of abundance.

The dining room sets the vibe for any formal gathering, but let’s be honest, it’s all about the board games and Lego creations in this space.

Back to one of the few original features of the home - the primary staircase. The stairs and risers are original and received a complete overhaul of re-finishing, while a brand new custom stair rail system and runner brought the space forward to the 2020s.

The primary bath boasts a 6’ x 5’ custom shower where every day is a spa day (privacy glass was important here…thank you Pella Corporation )!

No kids bathroom would be complete without toys.
