On the balcony...
In recent weeks, the balcony has played a major role in many lives. Especially with people who live in the city, in a small apartment on the third floor. I have often thought about them lately. I am so happy that I can go outside in the village where I live, into the garden. And even when I leave that garden, it is still fairly quiet here.
People quickly judge "all those people who all go out and sit down in the park." But where should you go when you live in the city? If everyone thinks: "I'm just going to the park for a little while", it is still busy there.
No... I don't envy them. Except... except in those moments when everybody applauded for people working in health care. That sense of togetherness. When there was singing on the balconies in Italy, when the Wilhelmus was played in the Netherlands during King's Day. The power of all those people close together, on their balconies, is suddenly very special. The balcony becomes a kind of stage, on which you show yourself. Where you have contact with your neighbors, perhaps much more than before.
Picture it: empty streets, an deserted city. With small stages everywhere: the balconies.
In terms of design, that fits in nicely with the way we put some beautiful things on stage in our house, after a Marie Kondo-like clean-up rage. As if it is a museum of our life. Small shelves such as the Museum Shelf by String Furniture lend themselves well to this. So you can watch the things that make you happy every day. Visible on their balcony.
