I'm a startup founder and decided to give back, launching a worldwide video campaign for a charity

We started Reedsy almost 3 years ago. We're not a unicorn, but we've helped authors create over 2,000 beautiful books. Our objective is to inspire more people to follow their paths and share their stories with the world. 

To do that, we decided to launch #IWriteBecause and ask famous writers why they write in short 1-minute videos. For every video we receive, we will donate $10 to Room to Read, a non-profit organization that seeks to provide girls in Africa and Asia with access to education.

To kickstart the campaign, we got about 40 influential writers to share videos with us, including David Heinemeier Hansson (NYT bestselling author of Rework and Remote), Mark Dawson (bestselling author of the John Milton assassin thriller series) or Hailey LeBlanc (BookTuber).

So why are we doing this? More often than not, entrepreneurs are the beneficiaries of good fortune. We might not all come from wealth, but most of us are certainly privileged enough to be raised in regions with access to decent education and the chance of social mobility. We believe that Room to Read is a great cause that deserves as much support as we can offer. Our campaign also touches at the heart of what we want Reedsy to stand for. We want to help people tell better stories, whether they’re writers of fantasy novels, political essays, or compelling true life tales. We want to inspire the next generation of authors while also doing our bit to give back.

All it takes is a few minutes to help make a positive impact. If you’re a writer of any kind — a blogger, a novelist, a journalist, a non-fiction writer, or a poet — you can share your love of the written word and do your part to help a good cause.
