Balancing Energy Savings and Indoor Air Quality using ASHRAE Std 62.1 - IAQP (Indoor Air Quality Procedure)
As the world grapples with the need for sustainable, energy-efficient buildings, maintaining high standards of indoor air quality (IAQ) while cutting energy consumption poses a unique challenge. outdoor air is crucial in removing indoor air pollutants by means of dilution, regulating humidity, and keeping occupants comfortable. However, with increasing urban air pollution, the air we bring indoors from outdoor is not always pristine—raising the question: How do we balance outdoor air intake with energy efficiency, particularly when outdoor air quality is compromised?
Traditional Ventilation and Its Limits
Most commercial buildings have traditionally relied on Fresh (may or may not be Fresh) Air Handling Units (FAHUs) with a set rate of outdoor air intake to ensure air quality. Many buildings that adjust ventilation rates based on carbon dioxide (CO?) levels and occupancy schedules. However, while CO? monitoring is a useful proxy for occupancy, it does not capture the full scope of indoor air quality. Various other indoor air pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulates, and humidity levels, can severely affect the indoor environment and occupant health.
Introducing the Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP): A Smarter Solution
The Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP), introduced by ASHRAE under Standards 62.1 – IAQP in 1981. Now, ASHRAE Standard 62.1 – IAQP 2022 version, released an IAQP calculator for the designers ease. Unlike traditional ventilation systems that bring in a fixed rate of outdoor air regardless of real-time indoor and outdoor air quality, the IAQP provides an efficient solution on both ventilation and air cleaning solutions ensuring the air quality parameters are maintained within an acceptable limit, making it more efficient in maintaining both health and energy savings.
How IAQP Works: From Theory to Practical Application
1.????? Air Pollutants (Design Compounds): IAQP runs with mass-balance calculation in (ASHRAE IAQP Calculator) with 15 sets of air pollutants which may include VOCs, formaldehyde, and particulate matter (PM) and other contaminants of concern (now called as Design Compounds) listed in Table 6-5, Page. No. 26, ASHRAE Std 62.1-2022.
2.????? Air Pollutants Concentration (Design Limit): Based on health standards and comfort requirements from cognizant authorities, ASHRAE Std 62.1-2022 sets acceptable concentration limits for each pollutant (now called as Design Limit) listed in Table 6-5, Page. No. 26, ASHRAE Std 62.1-2022.

3.????? Incorporate Filtration and Air Purification: IAQP allows for the integration of advanced air cleaning systems, ensuring the air cleaning system having the efficiency of meeting the design compounds within the design limits (air cleaning efficiency to be provided by the respective manufacturer in accordance to the ASHRAE Standard 52.2, 145 and various other safety testing like UL 2998 for ozone free emissions.?
The Benefits of IAQP for Commercial Buildings
1.????? Energy Savings: By reducing the dependence on constant fresh air intake, IAQP significantly lowers the energy required for cooling and dehumidification of outdoor air especially in hot and humid climate region. This alone can yield substantial energy savings over time.
?2.????? Improved Indoor Air Quality: IAQP’s pollutant-based approach ensures that ventilation directly addresses specific air quality issues, reducing the risk of harmful exposure to indoor contaminants.?
3.????? Adaptability in Urban Areas: As outdoor air quality worsens in many urban areas, IAQP provides a smart solution by integrating advanced air cleaning technology (like Advanced Filtration Media, Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization Technology etc.,) ensuring only clean, safe air enters the building. Note: While adapting advanced air cleaning technology, one should ensure that the product complies with UL 2998 certification for ozone free emissions?
4.????? Comfort and Health for Occupants: IAQP not only maintains a healthy indoor environment but also keeps occupants comfortable by ensuring the air pollutants are maintained within the threshold as set by cognizant authorities like WHO, EPA, NIOSH, OSHA etc.,
Conclusion: IAQP for a Sustainable, Healthy Future
The IAQP is an innovative, practical approach to balancing energy savings with the essential need for clean, fresh air in buildings. By moving away from traditional ventilation methods and relying on IAQP not only supports sustainability goals but also promotes healthier, more comfortable environments for building occupants. For facility managers, developers, and sustainability advocates, IAQP represents a major step toward the future of green buildings: a future where energy efficiency and occupant well-being go hand in hand.
