We’re surrounded by data. Every decision we make today can be backed by numbers, algorithms, and AI predictions. It’s tempting to lean on data for everything, thinking it’s the answer to all our leadership challenges. But here’s the reality: no matter how much data we have, instinct still plays a key role in decision-making. It’s the part that makes us human, and more importantly, makes us better leaders.
Why Data Alone Isn't Enough
Data can be incredibly useful-it can show trends, predict outcomes, and help us make more informed decisions. But if we’re only looking at the numbers, we’re missing half the picture. AI can tell us what might happen, but it doesn’t always capture the why or how people will react. Leadership is about more than just being right on paper,it’s about knowing your team, your customers, and the broader impact of your decisions.
There have been times when data told me one thing, but my gut said something different. Sometimes, that gut feeling was exactly what I needed to follow. Your instinct is shaped by years of experience, personal connections, and understanding the human side of your business. AI doesn’t know how a decision will affect team morale or customer loyalty,that’s something you can only sense through instinct.
Trusting Yourself in a Data-Driven World
It is easy to second-guess yourself because “the data says otherwise.” But if you’ve been leading long enough, you know that instincts have saved you more than once. The key is to use data as a guide, not a rulebook. Here’s how I approach it:

At the end of the day, it’s about balance. We’re not in a world where you can rely solely on instinct, but we’re also not in a place where data alone can guide you. Both have their place. The best leaders use data to inform their decisions, but they trust their instincts to make the final call.
What separates good leaders from great ones is this ability to blend the science of data with the art of intuition. You need both to lead effectively. Data gives you the facts, but instincts give you the edge. Balancing the two will help you not only make better decisions but also connect more deeply with your team and customers.
