Running a successful business while maintaining a fulfilling family life is one of the most common challenges faced by entrepreneurs today. The pressure to grow your business, meet client expectations, and manage a team can often overshadow the time and energy needed to nurture relationships with your loved ones. However, it is possible to achieve both—a thriving business and a rich family life—by adopting the right strategies and mindset.
1. Redefine Success
Balancing your business and family life starts with redefining what success truly means to you. Traditional business wisdom often equates success with constant growth, long hours, and endless hustle. But what if success also meant having the freedom to spend quality time with your family, take vacations, and enjoy your life outside of work?
In 2015, Tawnya Landis and I decided to buy one-way tickets to London for our family of five. Was it the best timing? Not really. Was it convenient or ideal for our businesses? Probably not. Was it stressful? Absolutely. We had to sacrifice other priorities to make it happen. But did it create an epic adventure and countless memories for our family? Without a doubt. Whenever we’ve consciously prioritized family over business, we’ve never regretted it.
Start by asking yourself what truly matters to you. Is it the revenue on your balance sheet, or the time spent with your children, spouse, and friends? Once you have a clear understanding of your priorities, you can begin to align your business goals with your personal values.
2. Implement High-Leverage Systems
One of the most effective ways to balance your business and family life is by implementing high-leverage systems that allow you to achieve more with less effort. This is where concepts like our Asymmetric Output Model come into play. The idea is to create a business model that works for you, rather than you working for the business.
Consider the following strategies:
3. Set Boundaries and Protect Your Time
One of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face is the blurred line between work and personal life. To truly balance your business and family, you need to set clear boundaries and protect your time. Here’s how:
Establish Work Hours: Define specific work hours and stick to them. Let your team and clients know when you are available and when you are not. This creates a clear separation between work time and family time.
Prioritize Family Time: Schedule time for your family just as you would for a business meeting. Whether it’s dinner with your family, a weekend getaway, or attending your child’s school event, treat these commitments with the same importance as business obligations.
Also, Tawnya and I have always made it a priority to have a regular date night, no matter how busy our schedules get. We’ve found that this time together is non-negotiable—it’s our chance to reconnect and focus on each other without the distractions of work or family obligations. We put everything else on hold, turn off our phones, and just enjoy being together. It’s been a key practice that strengthens our relationship and helps us stay personally and professionally grounded.
Unplug: Make a conscious effort to disconnect from work when you’re with your family. Put your phone on silent, avoid checking emails, and be fully present. This quality time is crucial for maintaining strong relationships and recharging your energy.4. Embrace Flexibility

4. Embrace Flexibility
While structure and systems are important, it’s equally vital to embrace flexibility. Life is unpredictable, and there will be times when your family needs you more than your business does, and vice versa. Being adaptable and open to shifting priorities is key to managing both roles effectively.
As parents, Tawnya and I know all too well that interruptions are just part of the deal. There have been countless times when we’ve been deep in a business discussion or working on a project, only to be interrupted by one of our kids needing something—a snack, help with homework, or just some attention. Instead of getting frustrated, we’ve learned to roll with it. We pause, address their needs, and then return to our work with a clearer head and often a renewed sense of purpose.
Embracing these moments rather than resisting them has not only strengthened our bond with our kids but also reminded us why we’re working so hard in the first place—to create a life that allows us to be present for them. It’s these small, everyday adjustments that help us balance the demands of both business and family life.
Create a culture in your business that supports flexibility, not just for yourself but for your team as well. When your team knows they have the freedom to manage their work-life balance, they’ll be more engaged and productive, which in turn supports your business goals.
5. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
When it comes to family time, it’s not just about the number of hours you spend with them, but the quality of those interactions. You don’t need to spend every waking moment with your family to build strong relationships. What matters is being present, engaged, and making the time you do have together meaningful.
Whether it’s having an uninterrupted conversation over dinner, playing a game with your kids, or simply being there for the small moments, these are the experiences that create lasting bonds.
6. Reflect and Adjust
Balancing business and family life is not a one-time effort; it’s an ongoing process that requires regular reflection and adjustment. Take the time to assess how you’re doing in both areas. Are you spending enough time with your family? Is your business running smoothly without you?
If you find that one area takes up too much of your time and energy, make the necessary adjustments. It’s okay to shift your focus from time to time, as long as you’re moving towards the ultimate goal of balance.
