Balancing Art & Aviation
At Great Lakes Helicopter (GLH), students pursue their dreams of flight, mastering the technical skills and precision required to operate helicopters. But one student is proving that passion knows no boundaries—combining her love for aviation with an incredible talent for art.
A current helicopter student Genevieve Kent-Bethley, at GLH, who is also a skilled tattoo artist at Gauntlet Tattoo, recently completed a breathtaking mural in the newly renovated classroom. This artwork not only enhances the space but also serves as a source of inspiration for fellow students and staff.
A Journey of Learning and Growth
Genevieve’s? journey as an artist began at an early age, growing up in a family of painters and sculptors. Although she never attended a formal art school, she sought out mentorship through an apprenticeship and surrounded herself with a supportive artistic community.
The Creative Process: A Work of Passion
When asked about the time it took to complete the project, Genevieve estimated it took between 10 to 12 hours in total. While the process required dedication and effort, the result was well worth it.
“It does feel rewarding to see my work displayed in the office. Equally so, knowing that it’s inspiring for others. I’m immensely happy to know that my artwork is encouraging to students and employees of GLH,” she shared.

Balancing Passions: The Key to Success
As someone juggling two demanding fields—aviation and art—Genevieve emphasizes the importance of time management.
“Time management is everything and sometimes better said than done. Prioritize what matters most in the moment and embrace the idea that both passions can complement each other.”
This mindset allows her to excel both in the cockpit and on the canvas, demonstrating that it is possible to nurture multiple passions without compromising on excellence.
The Intersection of Art and Aviation
Surprisingly, there are strong parallels between flying helicopters and creating art. According to Genevieve, both require deep focus and a strong connection with one's tools.
“It's also very freeing—where nothing else matters, you’re just fully immersed in the process.”
Beyond that, her artistic nature influences her approach to helicopter training and vice versa. Her creative background helps her stay calm under pressure and see the bigger picture, while her flight training has reinforced discipline and structure—qualities that also enhance her artwork.
