Just over a month ago, we lost one of India’s most iconic business visionaries, the Late Sir Ratan Tata. A quote by him holds a special place in my heart, one I carry like a compass: "Empathy and kindness are the greatest strengths a leader can possess."
But as we go about chasing our ambitions, is it really possible to stay compassionate and empathetic every moment of every day?
The human mind is often entangled in obstacles and competition and is too busy to embrace compassion on a daily basis. Yet, from my own experience, I can tell you that empathy doesn’t hinder progress—it fuels it.?
Let me tell you why.
Ambition Helps Us Conquer; Compassion and Empathy Helps Us Connect
As entrepreneurs, we sometimes succumb to the idea that if we are not in the driving seat, the ship might sink. We start pushing our team too hard, demanding results without stopping to check if we are nurturing them into leaders of tomorrow.
However, true leadership, especially in entrepreneurship, is building a team that can step into our shoes and keep the ball rolling whenever we’re not around. A recent study, for example, revealed that 87% of workers in the U.S. believe that empathy results in better leadership. (Source: Ernst & Young)
Earlier, I too held tightly to every decision. But as the journey went on, I trained myself to let go and trust my team—with empathy guiding me every step of the way. This can only happen when we accept different working styles and are patient with others growing at their own pace. It helps us to see that success isn't just about reaching the top—it's all about how we rise together.
Honestly, that’s probably the key reason why I am able to run 3 thriving businesses simultaneously, all while also balancing a healthy personal life!
Ambition Keeps Us Focused; Compassion and Empathy Keep Us Grounded
While on our way up the ladder, the relentless drive to get to the top takes a toll on us.??
We get so consumed by it, for example, that we might start missing family dinners or bonding time with friends, leaving our relationships to wither without realising it.
I’ve been there too. But somewhere along the way, I realized that while ambition can light the fire, compassion is what keeps the heart warm. When we take a moment to understand and appreciate the people who are with us through it all, we will find that every achievement becomes more meaningful.
Compassion and empathy turn each win into something shared, something memorable, and that’s not something I take lightly anymore.
Ambition Fuels Achievements; Compassion and Empathy Fuel Purpose
Picture this: You set out to achieve your dreams and finally make it happen. What next?
It may feel exhilarating at first, but you will soon set out on another conquest. However, achieving success without paying it forward will ultimately become exhausting and deprived of meaning.?
Compassion and empathy enable us to celebrate what we’ve achieved by further uplifting the ones who need a lending hand. This is what drives me to take some time every week to dedicate to the social causes that I deeply care about.?
I firmly believe that success is the sweetest when it creates a greater impact in the world by inspiring and lifting others along the way!
I’ll end today’s post with this: There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big and chasing your goals with all we’ve got. But let’s promise one thing to ourselves today–we won’t let ambition blind us.
So, how do you balance compassion with ambition? Tell me in the comments section; I’ll be waiting!
