Today the population of earth is just a shy under 8 billion people half of which reside in cities, the inhabitants of cities is set to increase, and the trend will push almost 80% of the world’s population into cities by 2050. Urban life has become a very practical way of living; however, the impact of the rapid growth can be seen in many developing countries which has caused a transformation in the urban and architectural styles of once ancient villages which were once a key identity and symbolic with that culture. Sometimes the decision to demolish and transform certain building of cultural and architectural importance is not carefully recognized and not well preserved by the community.
The city of Chiang Mai is no stranger to this #transformative process. The Lanna wooden house synonymous with Chiang Mai which reflects the heritage and local wisdom in Chiang Mai is slowly being replaced with new and modern designed homes within the city.?The CHARMS (Carrying heritage building as part of urban regions into a modern and energy-efficient society) project is a collaboration between various stakeholders from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and #CMUSPP to work with local stakeholders in the community in finding #innovate, #inclusive and #sustainable solutions for the importance of maintaining these types of historic structures into the Asian city of tomorrow.
