Balanced Consciousness vs. Disturbed Consciousness

Consciousness is the lens through which we experience reality. It is the field upon which thoughts arise, emotions flow, and actions take shape. The quality of our consciousness determines not only our inner state but also the ripple effects of our choices upon the world. There are two fundamental states of consciousness—balanced and disturbed. Every thought, decision, or action emerges from one of these two states, and their consequences are inescapable.
Balanced consciousness is a state of inner harmony, clarity, and awareness. It is a state where the mind is neither restless nor dull but remains steady, receptive, and aligned with truth. It is free from agitation, fear, or excessive desire. In this state, thoughts are pure, actions are guided by wisdom, and emotions flow naturally without turbulence.
A balanced consciousness does not mean an absence of challenges; rather, it signifies the ability to remain composed and act wisely even in the face of adversity. Take the example of a seasoned sailor. The ocean is unpredictable, yet the sailor remains steady, navigating the waves with skill and calmness. Similarly, a balanced mind does not resist the waves of life but understands how to flow with them, making the right choices at the right time.
Great leaders and sages have exemplified balanced consciousness. Mahatma Gandhi, despite immense opposition, remained peaceful and unwavering in his pursuit of justice. The Buddha, encountering suffering all around him, did not react with frustration but instead found a path to liberation, offering wisdom to the world. Their choices, emerging from a place of stillness and clarity, transformed history itself.
The Nature of Disturbed Consciousness
Disturbed consciousness, on the other hand, is a state of turmoil and fragmentation. It arises when the mind is clouded by fear, greed, anger, confusion, or unchecked desires. This state distorts perception, leading individuals to react impulsively rather than respond wisely. The decisions made in this state are often misguided, bringing suffering to oneself and others.
Consider the tale of a man who, in a fit of anger, destroys his own home. His momentary rage blinds him to the larger reality. Later, in a calmer state, he realizes his mistake, but the damage has already been done. Such is the nature of disturbed consciousness—it compels people to act out of alignment with truth, leading to outcomes that must inevitably be corrected, often at great cost.
History is filled with tragic examples of disturbed consciousness dictating decisions that led to disaster. Wars fought in blind aggression, betrayals driven by insecurity, and selfish pursuits that collapse under their own weight—all arise from minds that are unbalanced. Even on a personal level, moments of anger lead to regrettable words, unchecked fear leads to missed opportunities, and greed leads to eventual loss. Every action emerging from disturbed consciousness carries the seed of destruction within it.
Why We Must Run from Disturbed Consciousness to Balanced Consciousness
To exist in a disturbed state is to live in perpetual suffering. It is a state of war within oneself, a war that spills over into relationships, work, and society. It breeds illusion, making one believe that agitation and reaction are natural. But nature itself contradicts this. Observe a river—it flows effortlessly, adjusting to obstacles without resistance. Look at the sky—it remains vast and undisturbed despite storms passing through. In contrast, a disturbed mind clings, resists, and fights against reality, creating unnecessary suffering.
Whatever happens from balanced consciousness is bound to be correct. This is because balance aligns one with the deeper truth of existence. It allows one to see things as they are, not as distorted by personal fears or desires. Decisions made from this space have a certain correctness, even if they appear unconventional or challenging in the moment. When one moves with awareness and inner calm, life itself arranges circumstances in a way that supports and sustains the right action.
On the other hand, whatever happens from disturbed consciousness is bound to be incorrect. This is not a matter of morality but of natural law. Actions taken in haste, fear, or confusion are disconnected from reality, and thus they fail. The energy behind them is misaligned, and they eventually collapse under their own falsehood.
Finding Calmness in Whatever Happens
Many believe that control over circumstances leads to peace. But in truth, it is control over one's state of being that brings real peace. When consciousness is balanced, external events lose their power to disturb. Whether faced with success or failure, gain or loss, one remains centered. This is not indifference, but rather a deep trust in the unfolding of life.
The wisest individuals do not seek to manipulate reality; they align themselves with it. They know that whatever happens from a place of balance is already in harmony with the greater order. There is no need to force corrections. But when an action emerges from disturbance, correction becomes inevitable, often in painful ways.
Moving Toward Balance
How does one move from a disturbed state to a balanced one? The journey begins with self-awareness. Notice the quality of your thoughts. When anger, fear, or agitation arises, pause. Do not act immediately. Instead, observe. Breathe. Create space between the stimulus and your response. This simple practice begins to shift consciousness.
Regular meditation, spending time in nature, deep contemplation, and being mindful of one's inner state all contribute to stability. Surrounding oneself with wisdom—through books, teachers, or introspective conversations—reinforces this journey. But above all, one must develop the habit of questioning the origin of every thought: Is this arising from clarity or confusion? From balance or disturbance?
With time and practice, balance becomes the default state. And when that happens, life transforms. Actions align effortlessly with truth, relationships become harmonious, and inner peace remains unshaken. This is the power of balanced consciousness—it is not only the source of personal well-being but the foundation of all that is good, correct, and lasting.
