Balance as a necessary condition for a Transition

We have already illustrated the "Hero’s Journey”, but today we want to take a step forward in the theory of transition, presenting an unprecedented reading of the model, which synthesises elements not only of Jungian archetypes theory, but also of Voice Dialogue.

What we have determined is that each of the 3 "acts" of the Hero's Journey – that is: departure, initiation and return, for us the representation of the complete cycle lived by an individual, from his perception of having to face a change of identity until its complete realisation – is characterised by the presence of:

  1. coupling of archetypes generally considered in opposition;
  2. representatives of each of the 4 key needs recognized by Jung, namely: stability, independence, change and belonging.

As if to say that, in order to achieve a complete transition and evolution, in the various stages of the journey the main Selves must coexist with their own shadows and that the 4 fundamental human motivations must be present, represented, acted upon and considered.

Equilibrium is therefore the necessary condition for a transition.

To be clearer, we will go in order.

  • The phases related to the "departure" (from the status quo to the first trials) are dominated by the pairs of Innocent/Everyman and Hero/Caregiver archetypes. In the first couple, the practical sense of the Everyman gives strength and substance to the sometimes naive trust of the Innocent, in order to create a safe environment. In the second couple, the power of the Hero travels hand in hand with the sense of care and protection of the Caregiver, reinforcing the sense of responsibility.
  • In the "Initiation" phase (from trials to descent, to reward), Explorer and Lover and Rebel and Creator respectively take the reins: the first pair brings love for challenges and a romantic sense to life and to the journey, fundamental elements for creating the new identity. The second two nonconformist, anti-establishment energies work together to bring as much authenticity as possible to the new identity.
  • In the "Return and Stabilisation" phase, the Ruler, or the one who dictates the rules, stands alongside the Magician, that is, that innovative, ingenious energy, to strengthen the power of the new individual. Finally, the counterintuitive couple of the Sage and the Jester, that is, of logic and intellect, which merge with amused and vital energy, creates spaces of freedom.

What is the profound meaning of all this, brought back to the transition theory in general and to the Transition Mastery approach in particular?

A transition is a great change (of identity), which requires all energies to be mobilised and all needs to be satisfied, without exception. Dominant Selves must approach, dialogue, recognize their respective disowned energies, to free that energy potential, which, otherwise, would remain trapped in the very management of exclusion and dominance, in a certainly not creative paradigm of power and oppression.

Using the Jungian language, the various aspects of our personality must be able to connect to their own shadows.

Otherwise? Otherwise there will be a change, perhaps even greater, important, which will have a significant impact on the system in which we are inserted, but which will not have the depth of a systemic and sustainable transition.

It won't be systemic because it won't have been built on our entire system, but by censoring some voices in us.

And it will not be sustainable, because under such conditions, the expenditure of energy necessary to "silence" Selves and needs will make the change unbalanced and short-lived.
