Baker Engineering, LLC Awarded Phase I SBIR to 'push limits' of Advanced Propeller Technology for military UAS Systems

Nunica, MI — February 4th, 2025 — Baker Engineering, LLC has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to develop advanced propeller technology aimed at significantly improving fuel efficiency, range, and payload capacity for small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). This groundbreaking project leverages commercially proven technology developed by Pilot Si to enhance military capabilities, marking a pivotal step forward in UAS performance.

Revolutionizing UAS Propulsion

The new propeller technology being advanced by Baker Engineering and Pilot Si is expected to deliver up to a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency, a 20% extension in operational range, and increased payload capacity for small UAS platforms. These advancements will not only optimize mission endurance but also provide greater operational flexibility for defense applications.

“Our extensive experience in high-performance power and propulsion systems uniquely positions us to innovate in the UAS sector,” said Luke Wackerle, President of Baker Engineering. “This SBIR award underscores our commitment to advancing aerospace technology and supporting our military’s evolving needs.”

Collaboration with Pilot Si

To achieve these ambitious goals, Baker Engineering will collaborate directly with Pilot Si of Farmington Hills, a leader in mobility engineering solutions. Pilot Si’s proven expertise will be instrumental in adapting their commercial technology to meet the rigorous demands of military applications.

“Partnering with Pilot Si allows us to accelerate development and testing, combining their innovative designs with our precision engineering capabilities,” added Wackerle. “Together, we aim to deliver a transformative solution for small UAS propulsion.”

Driving Innovation in Defense Technology

Baker Engineering’s success in securing this SBIR grant builds on over 60 years of expertise in power and propulsion systems, including 25 years of dedicated Department of Defense research and prototype development. The company’s capabilities—ranging from complex, precision CNC machining to advanced simulation, manufacturing, assembly, and rigorous testing—ensure that they are well-equipped to deliver on the promises of this project.

Next Steps

During the Phase I period, Baker Engineering and Pilot Si will focus on the research, design, and initial testing of the new propeller technology. The results of this phase will inform subsequent development efforts, with the goal of moving into Phase II for further refinement and potential commercialization.

“This project represents a significant advancement in UAS technology and a testament to the innovative spirit at Baker Engineering,” Wackerle concluded. “We look forward to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and delivering impactful solutions for our defense partners.”
