Baisakhi - The Festival of Valour, Victory & KARMA...

Baisakhi is one of the most important days for many reasons. For Sikhs, it’s the foundation day of Sikhism/Khalsa - The Community of Saviours formulated by Guru Gobind Singh to vanquish the forced Islamic Conversions by the Mughals. Baisakhi is considered to be the day of Victory over injustice, brutality & repression. Another significant event in the Indian history which is related to Vaisakhi is the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. On 13th April 1919, troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Reginald Dyer fired rifles into a crowd of civilians, mostly Sikhs, who had assembled at the Jallianwala Bagh to participate in the annual Baisakhi celebrations. This happened to be a major incident in the Indian history of independence, triggering wide protests and the beginning of Non-Cooperation Movement - The start of British retreat...

For the farming community, it’s the festival of Spring Harvest OR it’s the day when they reap what they sow - Also the innate principle of KARMA. This literally interprets to the action of reaping what has been sown during the year. If we sow happiness, we reap happiness and if we sow sorrow, we reap sorrow. Besides, Baisakhi is celebrated across India & Asia Pacific Countries with different names.

Astrologically, Baisakhi - also referred to as ‘Mesh Sankranti’ falls on the day when the Sun enters the sign of Aries where it exalts & awakening the earth from its winter slumber. Aries being the first zodiac sign also marks the beginning of Hindu/Sikh New Year. Sun in Aries is about relentless energy to fight the odds, overcoming fears, true leadership & ensuring justice. Sun is one of the most important planets in Astrology signifying the soul. Sun is the source of energy, wellbeing & prosperity enabling life’s survival & evolution. Baisakhi is reckoned according to the solar calendar. Therefore it falls on April 13 every year and on April 14 once in every 36 years. There’s Vishakha constellation in the sky on this day.

Because Vishakha Nakshatra is formed on a full moon day, this month is known as a month of Vaishakh

Saffron - the colour of sacrifice, victory, valour & freedom is the colour associated with Baisakhi and Saffron is the most sacred colour which is also called - KESARI.

Sikhism is not just a community, it's the way of life, the mindset to engage in selfless service & working towards making this earth a better place. It's about working for equality, considering humanity to be the only religion & believing in just ‘One God’ who dwells in each and every living being. It’s about following the innate principle of KARMA & consciously sowing what we wish to reap. It’s about overcoming our fears & self empowerment. There is a Sikh in every human & sikh means - The Seeker……
