BAFTA 2021 COUNTDOWN

Having watched over 200 films, I am so looking forward to the BAFTA 2021 when the winners will be announced on 11th April on BBC 1. If you are in the UK, you can watch them live here.

Here are two more contenders for the BAFTA 2021 which you must see when you get the opportunity.

Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao

Based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, the film follows a woman who leaves her company town hometown in Nevada to embark on a life as a modern-day nomad after its economic collapse in the Great Recession. The film traces her journey through the American West, living in her van and exploring a life outside of conventional society. Witten, edited, produced and directed by Chloe Zhao, Nomadland stars Frances McDormand. The film has been praised for its performances, direction and more, and earned several nominations, including six Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards and seven BAFTAs. Director Chloé Zhao won the award for Best Director at the 78th Golden Globes, making her the second woman and the first Asian woman to do so. The Father, directed by Florian Zeller

This drama, based on director Florian Zeller’s play “La Père”, follows 80-year-old Anthony as he copes with progressing memory loss while trying to hold on to his identity and past. Although Anthony insists on living alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter Anne attempts to engage, this help is needed as Anne can no longer make daily visits and must also cope with loss of her father while he still lives. The film stars Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The film has been praised for its performances and poignant depiction of dementia. It received six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, four nominations at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, and six BAFTA nominations. Watch the film trailer here and stream it here.
