Badge of Honor

At Punch, we help our clients create and build brands. When we do this, we aim to align our client’s vision with an identity that will have an emotional connection with their target audience.

Making that connection means your audience is willing to wear their association with your brand like a badge of honor. They want to make sure everyone around them sees it and understands what your brand says about them. There are differing degrees of dedication, ranging from toe-in-the-water to following-you-into-battle, like this progression:

  • A magnet on your garage refrigerator
  • A magnet on the fridge in your kitchen
  • An online testimonial, recommendation, or review you post
  • A sticker on your water bottle, cooler, or computer
  • A logo T-shirt or hat (that you wear out in public!)
  • A sticker on your car
  • A tattoo – the ultimate show of brand loyalty!

Here are a few brands I’m willing to wear and what they represent to me:

  • Birdwell – childhood memories, craftsmanship, and functionality
  • Land Cruiser – adventure, durability, and practicality
  • Apple – different, creative, and the tool I use the most
  • Chelsea F.C. – supporter for better or for worse

Sure, different business categories lend themselves more to this type of display of brand loyalty. Still, if your brand doesn’t at least rate a fridge magnet, you likely have an opportunity to better communicate what you’re really about.

Charlie I've had this conversation with several people over the years and there are a handful of companies that always make the list. Usually it's because they have innovative products, are well made, have lifetime warranties, care about the customers (service) etc. Apple, Oakley, WüSTHOF, and Calphalon are always on my list!
