Bad System Config Info - Resolved

If you have recently upgraded to windows 10 or activated and attempted to patch your machine, with security updates.

I have had this issue happen more than once, decided that the workaround and repair for this problem if your suitable hardware is in order is quicker than rebuilding the machine.

With the increase of the recent ransomware 0 day exploits and bad script kitties at work its important that you create an image backup of your system once you make large data changes.

I will guide you through the steps once again to resolve any of these issues with limited tools and knowledge, this article is still for advanced users and administrators also.

Step 1.

Attempt to boot your computer into safe mode, using the MSconfig option or boot media (preferably a Windows 10 Media including DVD or USB recovery drive) if you are unable to use F8 option or it is disabled within the boot configuration policy.

Step 2.

Check for any changed software or hardware within the system and configure this accordingly removing anything you certain could be generating issues.

Step 3.

Boot from your USB or DVD recovery installation media, you can create one of these on an existing flash device within windows on a similar windows 10 machine. You set the boot options within your Bios pressing F2 or similar depending on your system during POST.

Step 4.

Go into Repair for your Windows Installation prompt then, advanced options and startup options and locate launch CMD with or without networking.

Step 5.

in CMD type: bootrec /repairbcd

(This will reattach your OS link so press enter after each)

type: bootrec /osscan

(Will scan your computer for valid installed OS)

bootrec /repairmbr

(Clears and rebuild the MBR partition on your hard drive)

Step 6.

Repairing your registry settings are simple

1. Use the following command: navigate to the following directory as per typing the below. (CD means change directory within Command prompt or CMD)
2. CD C:\Windows\System32\config
3. (here C is the partition where Windows is installed; important).
4. Enter the following commands one by one to rename these files with the .old postfix as described in the next line of code:
5. ren C:\Windows\System32\config\DEFAULT DEFAULT.old
6. ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SAM SAM.old
7. ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SECURITY SECURITY.old
8. ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.old
9. ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.old
10. Enter the following commands one by one to copy registry backup files to your current registry folder. This completes the manual restoration of your computer’s registry.copy C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\DEFAULT C:\Windows\System32\config\
11. copy C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SAM C:\Windows\System32\config\
12. copy C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SECURITY C:\Windows\System32\config\
13. copy C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SYSTEM C:\Windows\System32\config\
14. copy C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SOFTWARE C:\Windows\System32\config\

Step 7. If none of the above work, you would have two options - reinstall OS from the media installation required, to reset the computer using the option above.

Or restore from a backup image in the recovery options, preferably a device you have created a system and image file backup of your previous installation of Windows.
