A bad cup of coffee
I was driving to the airport very early this morning to catch a flight to visit our great teams in Grand Rapid, MI. Because I hold myself committed to my morning routine, I'd been up way earlier than I'd like and was dreaming about a great cup of coffee. Not your household Keurig cup or normal brew, but a great cup of coffee. The coffee that you can only get while present on the coffee plantations of Honduras or Guatemala. A cup where you can taste the perfectly balanced richness of the soil, the crispness of the fresh mountain air basked by the most beautiful sunrises, and drenched in the morning mist. The kind where you can taste the ruggedness of the weathered hands and faces of the seasonal laborer's handpicking the ripe red beans off the vine. A cup whose freshness can only come from being brewed just yards from the roasting house. You know, the perfect cup!
Because I was coming on two wheels and didn't leave myself enough time to stop at Starbucks, I had to settle for airplane coffee. As I was entering the plane, I could smell the coffee and began to get excited. When it finally arrived, with great anticipation, I took my first sip. Gross! It was warm, not hot, but lukewarm. What a huge disappointment! They could have served me iced coffee or hot coffee, but lukewarm? What could be worse? I just threw it away. Who wants anything lukewarm?
We have a core conviction at Churchill of being the hardest working person in the room. Whatever you choose to do, do it with all you've got. That goes for your job, marriage, family, faith, and everything else in life.
If you are in, be all in. If you are out, be all out. If you want in the game, play with all your heart or sit on the sidelines out of the way. There's nothing worse than a teammate who gives a half-hearted effort or an employee who quits but fails to tell anyone and just sticks around to collect a paycheck. I want to be surrounded by people who are so passionate about what they do and put in such effort that they energize those around them. People who want to be the hardest working person in the room. People who are willing to hold me accountable to the same.
Revelation 3:14 says - "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. "
Whatever you choose to do, do it as if you are working for God....you are. He wants you all in for Him. Not one foot in and one foot out. Don't be lukewarm in anything, especially your faith, or you risk being left on the sidelines.
Now, I just pray the airport in Atlanta has a short line at Starbucks!
