Today, I woke up to the rhythms of traditional music from my beautiful Puerto Rico, and it brought me a deep sense of joy. It has been a while since I started my day feeling so connected to my roots. Since 2012, I’ve practiced medicine as a psychiatrist in the United States, proudly serving Hispanic communities as the Medical Director for Asociacion Puertorriquenos en Marcha (APM)
Through my work with APM and involvement in CREARCONSALUD INC , a nonprofit founded by colleagues deeply concerned about the mental health crisis in Puerto Rico, I remain connected to my island and its people.
But today, my reflection is inspired by #BadBunny, who has taken cultural pride and mental health advocacy to extraordinary heights.
Few artists have captivated the world like him in an era when music transcends borders. Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, the Puerto Rican sensation is much more than a global music icon. He’s a cultural force whose impact extends beyond reggaeton beats and chart-topping hits. What makes Bad Bunny extraordinary is his ability to move hearts and minds, creating a space where art meets advocacy and positive vibes ripple through the Hispanic community and beyond.
Bad Bunny has given a voice to those who often feel silenced. His lyrics speak to heartbreak, anxiety, and the struggles of finding oneself, offering a reminder that mental health struggles don’t define us—they’re a part of the human experience. This message resonates deeply in a culture where strength is often equated with stoicism and silence.
When he dyed his hair or donned a skirt on stage, he wasn’t just making a fashion statement—he was challenging traditional gender norms and boldly saying that it’s okay to break free from societal expectations. In doing so, he subtly opened the door for conversations about identity, self-acceptance, and the pressures of conforming—all of which tie back to mental health.
For many Hispanics, music is more than entertainment; music is therapy. Bad Bunny’s ability to infuse positive vibes into his music and connect with his audience emotionally has created a safe space for listeners to feel seen and heard.
His willingness to use his platform to speak on mental health destigmatizes a topic often shrouded in shame. By normalizing conversations about therapy, self-care, and emotional well-being, Bad Bunny is rewriting the script for a new generation.
Bad Bunny’s impact isn’t limited to his music. His philanthropic efforts, which include supporting disaster relief in Puerto Rico and advocating for marginalized communities, demonstrate his commitment to promoting collective well-being. Imagine the impact if his influence were used to initiate mental health initiatives designed explicitly for Hispanic communities. These campaigns could utilize his music and platform to educate, inspire, and provide valuable resources.

The Hispanic community faces unique mental health challenges, from systemic barriers to cultural stigmas that discourage seeking help. Figures like Bad Bunny have the power to bridge this gap. He is already paving the way for a cultural shift through his authenticity and artistry, but this is just the beginning.
To create meaningful change, we need more collaborations between cultural icons like Bad Bunny, mental health organizations like APM, and initiatives like CrearConSalud. Imagine concerts that double as mental health awareness campaigns or music videos highlighting the importance of self-care and seeking support.
Bad Bunny is more than a musician; he’s a movement. His “superpower” isn’t just moving the world with his art; it is hope, breaking stigmas, and shining a light on mental health in Hispanic communities.
Today, and hopefully for the rest of my life, I am moving to the rhythm of progress and am proud to be Puerto Rican and Hispanic. My mother loves the guy, so he is now part of my family.
After all, as Bad Bunny might say, “Estamos bien.

1 个月I listened to Bad Bunny's new album, DeBí TiRAR MáS FOToS, and without a doubt, it’s his magnum opus. The album is a love letter to our native Puerto Rico. ?I listened to the full album during my run today and ended up running twice the miles I’d planned. I moved to the rhythms of bomba, plena, and salsa—the heartbeat of my ancestors who have loved, laughed, lived, survived, and continue to persist. This was exactly what my soul needed right now.?Mi gente, mi isla, mi corazón. ???
