Backstop's Hot Sauce Club
by Emily Greenquist
After months of planning and exuberant speculation, on Tuesday, August 8th at 11:08am CT, Backstop’s Hot Sauce Club had their inaugural tasting of three sauces that had been methodically researched and lovingly chosen. The following is a series of quotes gathered by a fair witness, who observed over a dozen Backstoppers dipping in and out of a courageous crowd of tasters on this historic and heroic event. Let’s listen in….
“Whole head feeling.”
“Wow.”
“It builds.”[pacing]
“I’m thinking about it and sweating.”
“I ate an entire, freshly picked habanero in grade school once. This is the same.”
“Drink the milk.”
“It spreads.”
“You look like you are focusing so much on that banana.”
“It’s in the head, the throat, the sinuses.”
“Drip it onto a bagel and cream cheese at our next B&B.” [in answer to “What do we do with it now?”]
“I’m not part of this [Hot Sauce] Club.”
“We need Lactaid on the grocery list.”
“Wait for it...”
“Nah, I’m good.”
[reading from the bottle and laughing] “Not recommended for use without dilution.”
“I think I want milk now.”
“It came back.”
“I have recovered.”
“Liquid rage.”
“You can do it!”
“Cheers!” [Clinking of cups]
“We’re doing it!”
“It’s pretty good.”
“It’s fine.” [bends over] “It’s fine.”
“There was so little on there.”
“Spices.”
“Minimal spillage. You’re fine.”
“It kind of hits you like a ton of bricks.”
“I haven’t gotten dared into eating something in years. Good job guys.”
Once challenges were met and spectators were appeased, the victorious members of Backstop’s Hot Sauce Club drifted (sometimes stumbled) away, back to their desks to concur other (more “computery”) feats of strength with an inner fire and a hint of milk.
