The backlog for processing Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) applications is starting to ease, according to recent figures provided by a government minister.?
Improving Processing Times?
Concerns have been raised that delays by the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) in processing LPAs have hindered families’ ability to act on behalf of vulnerable relatives. The backlog, which accumulated during the Covid pandemic, is now showing signs of improvement.?
Justice Minister Mike Freer stated in Parliament that the time taken to register and process an LPA peaked at just over 20 weeks last October. By February 2023, this figure had fallen to less than 18 weeks, with expectations for further reductions by the end of the year.?
Measures Taken to Address the Backlog?
Although Mr Freer did not specify when the OPG’s target of eight weeks would be achieved, he mentioned several measures to expedite the process. These include implementing shift patterns for OPG staff, hiring additional staff, and improving process efficiencies.?
