BACKGROUND VERIFICATION OF DRIVER IS A MUST TO ENSURE EMPLOYEE SAFETY

With the increase of violence and criminal activities in today’s world, it is very much necessary to have a background verification check for the cab drivers before hiring on the workplace because we expect any person to be trustworthy. After the completion of all necessary general verification by the company, the employer should ask the driver to submit a detailed report about them. If the driver is involved in any violence or, a criminal activity he will not get police clearance.

Recent Incident:

Recently, a cab driver was arrested for misbehaving with a lady employee in Kolkata, West Bengal on 14 January 2019. The incident happened when the lady passenger was coming from Camac Street to her house at Survey Park which is situated in South City.

The driver started misbehaving after coming mid of the way because of the route of the destination. The lady passenger asked him to take the main road; he was trying to take inside lane which was unknown to the lady passenger. When the lady passenger has forced him to follow the navigation the driver started misbehaving.

The cab driver used ill-suited words to the lady passenger and abused her. Though there was no charge for physical molestation but the lady passenger file a case against the driver under sections 506, 504 and 509.

What could have been done to avoid such an unpleasant incident?

1. Address Proof

Address verification should be a must for all corporate cab drivers. You should know the address of the agency and should verify with local neighbors if required.

2. Id Proof

Identity proof needs to be verified such as Aadhar card, Voter id, Ration card, Passport, and Pan Card.

3. Driving License

The driving license must be checked for all the drivers. Without a driving license, the driver is not allowed to drive any vehicles. The driving license must be verified with RTO as they may provide more details about the driver.

4. Word of Mouth Reference

It is also important to understand that the cab driver is been hired by the agency with a thorough hiring process and through a word of mouth reference.

5. Criminal Verification

Last but not least, the most important checklist is to check whether the driver is having any criminal history or not. Mostly, traffic offenses like drunk and driving, speeding and all can be checked.

After completion of the above verification activities, it is easy to arrive at a detailed report about the driver and it’s also easy to conclude whether the person can be hired or not.
