The Backbencher Syndrome
The one that doesn't belong

The Backbencher Syndrome

Have you ever felt out of place in a high-stakes professional setting? Like a fish out of water in a room full of industry titans? If so, you're not alone.

The Boardroom Battlefield

Picture this: I'm walking into a boardroom filled with industry superheroes. I'm the only "mere mortal" in sight. As I make my way to my natural habitat – the far end of the table (my comfort zone as a lifelong backbencher), I can't help but wonder if my name was added to the invitee list by mistake.

As introductions begin, it feels like a verbal weightlifting competition, with each person's title more impressive than the last. With every word, I feel my confidence shrinking. When it's my turn, I mumble something that sounds vaguely job-related.

In short, I'm Mr. Chalk attending Cheese Inc.'s board meeting.

As the meeting progresses, I find myself drowning in a sea of unfamiliar jargons. I keep nodding sagely, making what I hoped were thoughtful expressions. Inside, I am googling frantically: "What is synergistic paradigm shift, and can it be cured?"

Ideas pop into my head like popcorn, but each time I open my mouth, I imagine them laughing, perceiving me as ignorant.

So, I decide to wait for that one brilliant, earth-shattering suggestion.

In the end, I sit there like a spectator at a tennis match, my potential contributions left unspoken.

The Backbencher Syndrome

I know I'm not alone in my love for the back row. It's prime real estate. Great view, easy escape route, and conveniently far from any spontaneous "And what do you think?" questions.

Think about it:

In any session, the back seats fill up first

It's a challenge to get people to sit in the front row

Many of us instinctively try to hide in a crowd

But here's the thing: while I was busy blending into the wallpaper, I missed out on the chance to add my unique splash of color to the conversation. And who knows? Maybe my "trivial" input could have been the plot twist this corporate blockbuster needed.

Have you ever felt like an extra in your professional setting? Share your "fish out of water" tales.
