Back-to-school safety:
Answering your most common mask-related questions.
Q: If my children wear a mask, is it safe for them to go back to school?
A: Everyone wants to be able to get back to life as normal, and for students that means going back to school safely. It’s also important to remember that in-person learning provides students with vital services, including counseling and behavioral health support, meals, and other resources. Of course, we still know that the more an individual interacts with others, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. So, it’s important to remind children as they go back to school to social distance, wear a mask, and practice frequent hand washing to help slow the spread.
Q: Any advice for getting my adult children to wear a mask, they think we’re overreacting.
A: Encourage them to wear a mask to protect not only themselves but others. Be clear and kind about your concerns about them wearing a mask.
Q: I’ve heard that masks don’t work, so why should I wear one?
A: Wearing a mask helps prevent you from inadvertently spreading the disease if you have COVID-19 but don’t have any symptoms. We know that the virus is spread through respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs, talks, or sneezes.
Q: What should I do if I need to sneeze or cough when I’ve got my mask on?
A: Even if wearing a mask, continue to sneeze and/or cough covering your mouth with your elbow, and change your mask as soon as you can.
Q: I know I’m supposed to get my temperature checked when I go to the doctor’s office, but what is the acceptable/ normal temperature range? And what happens if my temperature is elevated?
A: Normal body temperature is 98.6. If your temperature is elevated, you should contact your primary care provider’s office for further instructions. If you are experiencing a life-threatening event, you should call 911.
Please wear a mask to protect you and others around you.
