What’s New?

It’s hard to believe that this is our 10th edition of the "Knockout Newsletter" (from The Final Round) with close to 5,000 new subscribers in the past few weeks! It's been rewarding to help both job-seekers and professionals advance past the final round interview and grow in their careers... with our main goal to create more "Knockout Stories" (AKA Success Stories but with a TFR twist).

Interviewed on “Chai & Coaching” YouTube Channel

AJ Eckstein, the founder of The Final Round, was recently interviewed on the “Chai & Coaching” YouTube Channel (30,000+ subscribers) where he discussed 6 essential tips to begin your job search the right way.

1. Network early:

  • Learn about your desired firm or industry from those who are already in it. Plus, that person could be a valuable resource down the line if you need a referral.

2. Involvement trumps GPA:

  • GPA isn’t everything. Have an impact on the clubs and organizations you’re involved with. Remember that a number doesn’t tell your whole story. Ask yourself: How are you a leader or taking initiative in your community?

3. Take advantage of college job portals:

  • Take advantage of the job portals offered at your school (e.g. Handshake). By applying through a job portal, you’re placed in a separate pool of applicants all coming from your school, rather than the general pool of applicants you’d be placed with if you apply on the firm’s site.

4. Tap into your alumni network:

  • The best place to start networking is with alumni from your school since you already start with a similarity. Try to go deeper, such as a common club/organization, hobby, work experience, or even location.

5. Do your Research:

  • It’s the little things that separate you from the rest and help you get past the final round interview. Utilize LinkedIn, look into your recruiters and interviewers, and ask them questions that stand out from the basic ones. Do more research than the next person!

6. Apply to diversity programs:

  • Be on the lookout for diversity programs (if you meet the program criteria) since they open up early for underclassmen. This is a great way to get early experience into an industry you might be on the fence about (e.g. Bain & Company BEL Program).

Business Buzz

The Summer is quickly coming to an end. And whether that means the return to school, a return to the office, or the need for a new routine, it’s important that you take the right steps to get back into the swing of things.

Apart from the career resources (posted at the end), we’ve included some tips to help you wish the summer goodbye and say hello to what the fall has in store…

??? Plan ahead: Creating a schedule and updating it throughout the week is a great way to stay on top of your tasks. Alleviate the stress by using project management tools like Airtable and adding deadlines to your calendar.

?? Change up your workspace: The best way to change up your work routine is to change up your workspace. It could be moving from your bedroom desk to the kitchen, or working out of a local coffee shop. Plus, creativity comes from new environments.

? Find a hobby: Whether it is a sport, volunteer work, or creating a YouTube channel, finding something to do outside of your main hustle will go a long way. Not only does it provide you with something to look forward to outside of work but it will actually improve your mental health by relieving you from the stress of work.

? Take advantage of little spurts of free time: We waste a lot of time scrolling through social media. Next time you have a spurt of free time, try to fire off another email or even read the most recent edition of the Knockout Newsletter. Your future, more-productive self with thank you.

?? Listen to music (or The Final Round Podcast!): Listening to your favorite artist or podcast could be a great way to dial-in your work, particularly in an individual setting. We personally LOVE listening to “Lo-fi music” while working.
