Back to the Roots – Part 2

The Renaissance of Natural Building Materials & Sustainable Practices. Part 2 of 3 – Rammed Earth, Lime & Local Timbers.

Jordana’s New Home, a Master-Piece of Sustainable Build & Design

This environmentally conscious home is beautifully situated in the picturesque Lowveld region, blending harmoniously with its natural surroundings. It incorporates cutting-edge technologies and designs that not only minimize its environmental footprint but also optimize energy efficiency.

Mr. and Mrs. Morgan courageously envisioned a future where sustainability and harmony with nature seamlessly intertwine. They dared to dream beyond the ordinary and embarked on a remarkable journey to create an eco-friendly, natural build home. Their goal is to set a shining example of environmental consciousness for others to follow.

Fuelled by their deep appreciation for the awe-inspiring landscapes, abundant wildlife, and untouched habitats of the Lowveld, the Morgan’s were determined to create a sanctuary that coexists harmoniously with its surroundings. Their vision extended beyond mere functionality, as they longed for a residence that would captivate the senses with its aesthetic allure, seamlessly blending modern elegance with the rustic charm of a natural build. Architectural ingenuity took centre stage, skilfully integrating indoor and outdoor spaces to establish a symbiotic relationship between the house and its environment.

Andy Horn, the visionary behind Eco Design Architects, is a pioneer whose unwavering dedication to both architecture and the environment has transformed the way we perceive sustainable living. Andy’s ground-breaking contributions to sustainable architecture have earned them widespread acclaim and numerous prestigious awards. Notably, Andy spearheaded the construction of the striking rammed earth walls and prominent timber structures, which serve as integral elements in the overall architectural masterpiece that is the house.

Through the collaboration of a skilled and dedicated team from Eco Design Architects andAssegai Services, the Morgan’s dream was transformed into a remarkable reality. Drawing on their expertise, these professionals brought together their collective talents to create a truly extraordinary outcome. JNA Roofing, in particular, played a pivotal role by devising an innovative roofing solution that seamlessly combined the ecological advantages of a green roof with the structural integrity and sustainability of timber trusses. Sustainability was a top priority, with locally sourced timber species carefully selected and naturally treated with boron for exceptional durability and resistance against decay.

The earthy hues of the stabilized rammed earth walls, earthen floors, and eucalyptus timber structure beautifully contrast with the sleek lime-plastered internal brickwork walls. This juxtaposition of natural elements and smooth finishes creates a visually captivating and harmonious aesthetic throughout the space.

ProNature‘s breathable indoor and outdoor wood, wall and floor coatings are applied to all surfaces to both enhance and protect the natural beauty of these building materials. The use of transparent and opaque finishes, made from natural ingredients and mineral pigments, creates a perfect blend of earthy elements and modern colour tones within this home.

Undoubtedly, this embodies a master-piece of sustainable construction and eco-friendly living in every aspect imaginable!

May this inspire all of us to paint a greener future – Together!
