Back to monoliths

Computing seems to be coming a full circle. Started with big monoliths then over time went the complete other way of discreet with desktops to mobiles. Now with the rise of Cloud, AI, Machine Learning it is consolidating back into monoliths albeit in the cloud and spread over large geographies and data centers. But as far as the users are concerned, monoliths all the same. The computing devices we are using are more and more just I/O points of this new monolith.
For software developers, where do we go from here? We will need to transform into one of the few types like
- People who create and maintain the Cloud, AI, Machine Learning infrastructure.
- Or more importantly people who will train the AI to solve the business problems which we are solving today by writing code.
- Or people who will create user interface elements for the AI to choose and present to the user depending on the situation. E.g. VR based UI elements, voice elements and even the mundane flat screen UI elements; but not hard coded into a GUI, the AI monolith will generate the situational UI on the fly.
