How Office Surroundings Enhance Work Motivation After Summer Holidays

In Finland, most of us are lucky enough to have a 4-week Summer Holiday. Having an inspiring office surrounding is crucial when we transition back to the routine of work, the shift from the relaxed vibe of holidays to the structured environment of the office can be challenging. Yet, the physical surroundings of our workplace play a crucial role in reigniting our motivation and setting the tone for a productive period ahead. Here’s how the right office environment can enhance work motivation after the summer holidays.

1. Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere

After the freedom of summer, stepping into an office that feels welcoming can make all the difference. Warm lighting, comfortable seating, and aesthetically pleasing décor create a sense of comfort. Incorporating elements like indoor plants can also bring a touch of nature indoors, maintaining a connection to the outdoors and providing a calming effect. After all, the workspace is the home of company culture and brand. As pointed out in our Future Workspace Report, The majority, 76% of the respondents agree that the office helps to build and strengthen the corporate culture. Moreover, the same amount, 76% of the respondents feel that seeing colleagues and team members in person is important for unity. 30% also think that it is easier to live the company's values at the office.

2. Personalized Workspaces

In our Future Workspace Report, we highlighted that the way people work has a profound impact on the culture of the business. We have stated that the workspace is a concrete tool for company culture, innovation, and talent attraction. But only 2% of the workers state that they are currently working in a perfect workspace. What can companies do to create the best possible work environment, and what do people actually want from a workspace? A well-designed workspace can set us up for success by leading us to increased productivity, happier employees, and higher profits. For example, encouraging employees to personalize their workspaces can significantly boost morale and motivation. Allowing personal items like family photos, souvenirs from travels, or even a favorite coffee mug helps employees feel more at home and valued, making the transition smoother.

3. Collaborative Spaces

In our Future Workspace Report, both employees and employers agreed that the prime advantage of being present at the office is meeting colleagues in person—spontaneously or planned, work-related or not. The spontaneous social and cultural impact that comes with live meetings is yet unbeatable by virtual tools.

Open and collaborative spaces foster a sense of community and teamwork. After the summer break, employees often return with new ideas and fresh perspectives. Collaborative spaces encourage the sharing of these ideas, sparking innovation and collective motivation.
