We all want more revenue. We all want higher profit. Somewhere between starting our businesses and achieving some success, the dream of huge bank balances has faded.
When I speak to business owners, they all tell me the same thing. "I want freedom". The freedom they are all searching for is freedom of choice. The choices they want to make are, where to live, what schools their kids go to, what car they drive, where they go on holiday, how they spoil our significant other, the list goes on.
Add all of this to the long list of things that need to happen when you run a business and very soon it seems out of reach. It doesn't have to be. Unfortunately, we are bombarded by information all the time! Media companies have learned the art of using behavioural economics to drive the fear responses in each one of us. This has created a society of people, who happen to own business, who suffer from the fear of missing out [FOMO]!
FOMO results in smart competent business owners chasing the next shiny thing. Sometimes it's a tool or an app. But here is the deal, the new tool/app might make things more fun for you, it may even make things a little bit easier for you. But in my experience, it rarely solves your problem you are facing right now.
Businesses are lacking predictable sales because they lack the basics. The basics of business require us to focus on the things that move the dial. The core of your business is the five key areas that produce 80% of your annual revenue. The core areas are:
- Generating leads
- Converting the leads into sales
- Creating complementary products/services and experiences that drive your customer to buy more from you
- Charging prices that communicate your value
- Generating profits
These are the basics. If you are not actively working on one of these areas every day, then your business simply is not going to grow.
I partner with my clients to identify the most appropriate strategies in the core areas of the business that will deliver the best results. When was the last time you were actively working on growing your business? It doesn't have to be complex, it doesn't have to be hard, but you do have to be consistent!
Isn't it time that we focus on getting the basics right?
