"Back to the Basics Leadership"
Despite its illustrious sound........it's not always a good thing.
To be honest, when I hear someone refer to themselves as a "Back to the Basics Leader" ?—?my spider sense starts to tingle.
In many cases, this is a misguided call back to a simpler time when the accessibility of information was limited and conformity was championed.
Unfortunately, the infatuation with "Back to the Basics Leadership" is often an ill-advised attempt to disguise the implementation of a draconian approach?—?and a reversion to "Leading with an Iron Fist".
In my opinion:
"Too many leaders invest their time and energy into romancing the past and demonizing the future."
Leadership is dynamic and ever-changing, and it requires leaders to possess the mental agility and social skills necessary to adapt to the variables of tomorrow.
For example, a couple of decades ago?—?the "Basics of Leadership" did not place a heavy emphasis on "Diversity, Empathy, and Self Care".
These "People-Oriented" initiatives are now a staple of the 21st-century leadership environment.
And YES, some "Basics of Leadership" remain constant over the decades, such as "Accountability, Trust, and Effective Communication"........
But, as we continue to grow and develop, we must constantly fight back against complacency and stagnation — and allow our leadership principles and practices to mature.
The social progress and technological advancements of the 21st-century leadership environment are real.
Leaders should strive to be lifelong learners?—?with the goal of transforming newly acquired knowledge and information into real-world applications.

2 年Works both ways. Leaders also attempt to veer away from basic leadership and indulge people. Being in compliance to standards, rules, or laws is the basics. Emphatic leaders who treat people with dignity and respect can teach basic leadership.

2 年Hey Noel! Loved the read and I agree that in many cases the adoption of this approach may be an attempt to be less dynamic, responsive, and empathetic. All things that we’ve come to expect of today’s leader. For discourse purposes, I’d offer that sometimes the “romanticizing” comes from a place of self awareness and acknowledgement that the leader has allowed herself/himself to stray from some of the constants that you mentioned. Or, that the systems that have been erected around those constants have become convoluted and contrived to the point that the systems prevent effective solutions to obstacles (bureaucracy). Loved the article brother! Something to get my think tank working early this morning.
