AI Adoption and Perception: New Survey Offers Key Insights for SaaS Professionals

AI adoption

A recent survey by the Verge in collaboration with Vox Media’s Insights and Research team and The Circus has shed light on the public's perception and use of AI.

The survey, which polled over 2,000 US adults, revealed that despite the buzz around AI, the use of dedicated AI products remains limited, with younger users leading the way and adoption rates dropping as age demographics increase. While most respondents were familiar with ChatGPT, other AI tools like Bing with ChatGPT, My AI (Snapchat), Bard (by Google), Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion were less commonly known. Across industries, the primary application of AI is in generative systems that produce text, brainstorm ideas, edit writing, and create images, audio, and video. These tools are being integrated into professional systems like Photoshop and WordPress, with the most common uses being creative experiments such as generating music and videos, creating stories, and editing photos.

The survey also highlighted public concerns around the ethical use of AI image generators like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, which are trained on large amounts of data scraped from the web, often without the consent of the original creators. The survey revealed a significant level of ambivalence around using these tools and how best to respond to these ethical issues. 44% had asked AI to copy an artist’s style, and 43% felt that the process should be banned. Both groups came together on the question of compensation, as 70% believed that AI companies should pay artists for the use of their work. ?They also came together on the question of AI and the law. More than three-quarters of respondents agreed that regulations and laws need to be developed regarding the development of AI, demonstrating a strong demand for higher standards in AI systems and disclosure of their use.

Survey responses revealed a split between worry and excitement about the potential impact of AI on personal and professional life and society at large. For instance, 56% of respondents think “people will develop emotional relationships with AI,” and 35% of people said they’d be open to doing so if they were lonely. This comes as no surprise the SaaS Wire team, who recently covered how AI is impacting America’s loneliness epidemic. The mixed feelings of excitement and worry about AI's impact highlight the importance of managing change as companies integrate more AI into their services.

The Verge survey results underscore the importance of user education and transparency in AI development. As AI becomes more integrated into products and services, it will become increasingly critical for companies to ensure that the public understands how these tools work, what they can and can’t do, and the ethical considerations involved in their use. The demand for regulations and higher standards in AI development signals a need for self-regulation in the SaaS industry. To succeed, businesses will need to proactively address these ethical concerns and establish best practices for AI use – and they’ll need to start now if they haven’t already.
