Microsoft has announced the general availability of Azure Linux, a new open-source operating system distribution. The company built the OS from scratch, without forking any existing Linux distribution like Fedora. It is commercially supported, but the primary purpose is to run as a container host in Azure Kubernetes Service. The OS is described as opinionated as it only includes the bare minimum to run a Kubernetes cluster with a focus on Azure. Azure Linux is not comparable to Amazon Linux, but Microsoft hopes the community will build it into a similar product comparable to Amazon Linux.
With Policy Analytics, teams can efficiently manage and optimize Azure Firewall policies, surface suboptimal rules, and detect and recommend deletions of outdated network references, all while providing enhanced visibility into traffic flow. The feature also includes a single-rule analysis experience to analyze traffic flows and optimize specific rules based on actual traffic. Pricing for Policy Analytics is available on?the Azure Firewall Manager pricing page.
Azure VMs can save time and disk space by creating incremental snapshots instead of full snapshots for point-in-time backups of managed disks. This backup method records all changes since the last backup, resulting in a smaller and more efficient backup file. Incremental backups are especially helpful for VMs with infrequently changing content, as they save costs on storing and transferring data while reducing egress and compute bills. You can configure incremental snapshots on Azure portal or using the CLI.

Microsoft introduces three enhancements to simplify the use of infrastructure as code (IAC) templates and streamline the Terraform workflow on Azure: Azure Deployment Environment (ADE), Terraform AzAPI Provider, and Azure Terrafy (AzTFy). The Azure Datum Lab solution accelerator enables data personas to streamline deployment and easily deploy required data infrastructure on Azure.
Microsoft launches Azure AI Studio allowing customers to build chat apps like Copilot which uses machine learning model from Azure and OpenAI. The studio lets customers combine data to create chat assistants or other AI-powered apps. It could be a lucrative line of revenue for Microsoft.

Mandiant researchers have observed threat actors abusing privileged account access to Microsoft Azure Serial Console, bypassing many defense and detection methods, thereby gaining full administrative access to text-based console window of virtual machines. The technique is widely known in the security community and could lead to the compromise of an organization's Azure environment, with threat actors being able to plant deepfakes, modify data, and even control IoT assets often managed within the cloud.
Microsoft has announced the GA of the Azure Linux container host for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). The Azure Linux container host for AKS is a lightweight, secure, and reliable OS platform optimized for performance on Azure. Microsoft has announced the release of vector search on Azure Cosmos DB MongoDB vCore, which integrates AI-based applications and uses OpenAI embedding to store, index, and query high-dimensional vector data within Azure Cosmos DB MongoDB vCore. This feature enhances efficiency, reduces complexity, and unlocks insights previously hidden in data.
