Azure Lighthouse Concepts - Quick Bites!

Azure Lighthouse Concepts - Quick Bites!

Recently, I came across the concept of Azure Lighthouse service. This feature became generally available in July 2019. If you are new to this concept like me, then this is the right place to start with.

Here we are considering ourselves as a service provider and we will see how this feature helps us and the customers.

Let's go through the high-level pointers from my notes to understand this concept and the major benefits-

How had it worked before?

Before Azure lighthouse how it worked for managing customer's subscription-

  1. Earlier, as a service provider we would log in to a customer's Azure tenant with an account provided by the customer to manage their subscriptions. We only had visibility of one customer's Azure environment at a time.
  2. Customer had management overhead to create and provide that account, reset the password if necessary, and remove the account once the service contract ended.

How Azure Lighthouse helped?

Azure Lighthouse is a comprehensive and unified platform tooling that enhances the capabilities of service providers.

  1. Now, we as a service provider, with Azure Lighthouse we are provided a better way of accessing and managing Azure tenants for multiple customers while supporting the different requirements of each customer's service contract.
  2. Removing the administration overhead from the customer.
  3. Customers have the visibility of our access and activities inside their environment. Activity log is saved in customer's tenant.

Other Benefits!

Below are the major benefits of using Azure Lighthouse for managing multiple customers:

  1. Azure Lighthouse is free, provided you have an existing Azure subscription. There's no cost to onboard a customer and no ongoing cost for any of the Azure Lighthouse capabilities.
  2. Let's you manage the Azure customer's subscriptions and resources using your own Azure environment. Enables efficient cross-tenant management.
  3. It displays a single view to control and manage all of the customer's Azure resources that we have access to.
  4. Azure Lighthouse seamlessly integrates with existing tools, APIs, Azure managed applications, and partner programs like the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program.
  5. It supports various service provider scenarios, including multiple licensing models such as Enterprise Agreement (EA), CSP, and pay-as-you-go. Partners can link their impact on customer engagements using their partner ID.
  6. Manage customers’ Azure resources using Azure Delegated Resource Management.
